‘Leonardo Da Vinci for Kids’ is a good Renaissance history themed book with an emphasis on introducing children to some of the classical elements of Leonardo Da Vinci’s genius. The activities and chapters are inspired by the many and diverse pioneering accomplishments of Da Vinci in the areas of drawing and painting, observations of nature and human anatomy, his studies in science and his inventions in military weaponry and machinery. Along with the activities offered in the book, Da Vinci’s early life and the history of Renaissance Italy are thoroughly presented to make it a worthwhile learning book. The projects also help emphasize some of his advances in artwork, including his detailed observations of birds, animals and plant life, as well as innovations in light and shadow, as well as measurement and perspective techniques in painting. The book begins with the life of Leonardo as a boy, and the beginning of his life long fascination with observing, studying, and carefully drawing nature and the world around him. Some of the subjects included in the book are; learning to use a Paintbrush, Map Making, learning a Bird’s Eye View, a Renaissance Herb Garden, a Lunch like Leonardo’s, making a Life Mask, Mirror Writing and understanding Perspective in Drawing. This book is a nice balance of quality reproductions of Da Vinci’s sketches and drawings, a good presentation of the range of his many areas of talent, and interesting aspects of the historical time period, which make it enjoyable learning for both children and adults.
