This movie was originally broadcast in the US as just the professional and this release is the unedited original French version along with the theatrical version. In this unedited version there is approximately 40 additional minutes of uncut action that the Director originally used to tell the story. Leon (Jean Reno) lives next to Mathilda (Natalie Portman) and when her entire family is killed by a police drug task force headed by a psychotic agent (Gary Oldman) Mathilda moves in with Leon and soon discovers that he is a "Cleaner". A Cleaner is a hit man who works for anyone with the money to pay him, Leon happens to work for a mafioso named Tony (Danny Aiello). Leon takes Mathilda under his wing and promises to protect her and teach her how to become a cleaner. This movie is the first movie that Portman appears in and she plays the part flawlessly. Reno was relatively unknown before this movie appeared in the US and he has had many great roles since. Veteran actor Gary Oldman plays the part of the psychotic agent perfectly and his character is just as creepy as ever. The uncut version of the film goes into much more detail about the relationship between Leon and Mathilda including her actually going on some hits with him and much more into the bond that develops between the two. I was surprised by how much was cut from the Americanized Theatrical version. If you get this be sure you watch the uncut version, it makes the entire movie make a bit more sense. I would recommend this movie, especially the uncut version to anyone who enjoys a great movie. If you have not seen this movie, get it, you will enjoy it.Read full review
While I admit this movie is NOT for all tastes, it has become one of my favorites over the years. The themes are dark, but the story is interesting character studies of 4 people whose lives are intertwined. The cleaner, the bad cop, the little girl, and the restaurant owner. The story is woven together very well and the funny scenes help soften the hard edges. Natalie Portman's first movie role, it may be her very best. On a side note, for those who appreciate the sound track, the Blu-Ray edition has additional LFE deep bass that is absent from the DVD. The Blu-Ray is a definite upgrade in all aspects.
Engaging story and characters with a top notch cast. From the very beginning to it's end, this film keeps you interested. I only wish Jean Reno had done more films in this genre.
