These are materially-older "pulls" from servers (mine had v15 firmware on them) so you will want to reflash them to current firmware *and* make sure you do it in the correct order, with the correct firmware -- which is not the same as the various 8-port cards out there! Specifically, the BIOS won't enable unless you erase the NV first as the two I got both had it optioned off. The latter doesn't matter unless you want to boot from drive(s) on the card, then it is mandatory. With that said once you've got them flashed forward to modern "IT" firmware they work exactly as you'd expect them to. While they're not *the* fastest things out there in the market today for moderate numbers of SSDs or spinning rust they're faster than the drives are and for the price you can't beat 'em. Just be aware that these are full-height cards -- then again if you're going to stuff 16 drives in a case you're probably not doing it in a 1 or 2u cabinet, right? :)Read full review

16 internal drives attached to this card plus whatever you can attach directly to your motherboard and you've pretty much filled up any 4U or full tower chassis to capacity with 3.5 in drives. I'm using with FreeNAS.
