I have been using a 990 since it came out many years ago. I have other newer cameras but this one has the best close up shots especially for Ebay items to sell. Good pictures are a must. Lower resolution doesn't matter since they will be made smaller for publication and emails anyway. These are very tough with a magnesium body.....mine went through a tough tour even surviving a fall down a set of concrete stairs! The swiveling head can't be beat for taking shots at angles other cameras cannot, even overhead shots.....

I love this camera. I would have rated it excellent, except the battery door, after use, will not stay closed. I loved this camera because of ease of use, very good pics, and great macro closeups (which I use mostly), and the size is just right, not to big or small. I loved it so much I bought a newer model with 10 Megapixels thinking I would get much better pics. Not so, did not look better, but worse, the macro close ups were terrible, and hard to take. It was smaller, hard for me to use. So I bought another one of these, so this is my second Nikon Coolpix 990 3.2, and I did get an adapter with this one so, I don't use the battery door much at all, hoping it will last longer. I am still using the first one and it works great, but I can't use batteries with it. I use my camera mostly, for indoor closeup pictures. I have used it for outdoor, and zoom, and it does fine for the size and price of this camera, but if you want fast action outdoor pictures, that are professional quality, this one is not the best for that, you will have to spend much more money to get better. I have to say for my use, it is great!!!!Read full review
I purchased this camera used from a photographer friend and am very happy with the quality of the images and the ease of use. I am a miniture artist and needed a camera to take detailed images of my work. The macro setting on this camera is perfect, even though I also have another macro lens to attach to it, I have never had to use it, because the one that is built into the coolpix works very well. I use this camera daily, both at home and when I travel and have never had a single problem with it. Remembering to reset the screen viewing time from 30seconds to 1 minute after you change batteries is the only fault I have found with this camera.
Being that this camera is considerably old, I gave it an average rating. Pros: 1. Great photo's 2. Amazing Macro 3. Swivel body is nice 4. Takes 4 double at battery's that last a decent amount of time. 5. Size is not too bad; it's about the size of an old 110 camera. Cons: 1. Autofocus is slow 2. Saving large images is slow 3. Low lighting photography is terrible. 4. Somewhat noisy Overall... You can pick one of these up on ebay for about 50 bux so the price to rating ratio is fair. It doesn't compare to today's camera's, so if you're looking for the latest and greatest, look elsewhere. If you're looking for something fairly cheap that can take great photo's and great macro shots, look no further. Just keep in mind that it's a slow camera. My 990 has been dunked (Fully submerged for over an hour) in water more than once, and the only thing that went bad on it was the flash. Sure I had to let it dry for a few days, but this never affected the quality. This camera is NOT water resistant, but I figured I'd add that piece to show its durability.Read full review
Boasted as first reasonably priced digital camera to take 100ASA equivalent images(3.1 megapixel). This one is 3.3, so just a little finer than 100ASA. Hybrid from the fact of using a totally mechanical lens/leaves, superb glass ground lens married to a digital processor, W/auto focus. I bought mine new for around 1,000$ way back when. Have never had a problem(knock on wood). Not even the battery door some complain about. The door is plastic, put batteries in correctly, push down on door(spring loaded)before sliding the catch to open/close and you won't break it. Handy swivel feature of lens , especially when mounted on tripod. You can set the exact angle of lens you need, while seeing the screen image comfortably. I have larger newer digitals, however when walking around on vacation they are heavy to carry around and end up sorry I didn't take this one, put it in a fanny pack or pocket and forget about it till you want it. The adjustable zoom is excellent/accurate, just hold it down on a solid support to prevent camera shake as you should with any camera, use self timer for superb macro, so you can maximize the beauty of this extraordinary ground glass lens old Nikkor quality! Superb on family quick pics. Simple quick to learn. Only accessories you need is a memory card w/card reader & 4AA batteries. Download a free manual from internet for quick easy settings. This is all quality that you can pick one up for chump change, be sure and get one for your Nikon Collection. As this was their transitionary high resolution image camera, it will certainly be a highly collectible by the knowledgeable, like the Nikkormat/Nikomat EL,Ft's & Nikon F,F2,F3,N2000 35mm. Just got another, talked myself into it!Read full review
