This is a thoroughly absorbing read, focused on three individuals in the great migration, in which millions of Blacks moved out of the southern states to cities north and west, between 1915 and 1975, to seek a better life. Despite its daunting length, over 500 pages, I could scarcely put it down. The research is solid, the content is compelling, the writing is excellent. Anyone interested in American History in the 20th century will gain great insight from this masterpiece.

Highly recommend. Already many years since it came out but timeless content. With the Black Lives Matter movement urging me to become even more aware of racism, even when I thought I was an aware, liberal, white and educated woman, I started furthering my education with this book. It is invaluable for opening up the mind and letting me better understand how we got to where we are today.

The book gives a look into the lives of slaves children during the Jim Crow era. The author also details specific work details of the sharecropper period. So far, the orange grove stories are ones I had not heard or thought about.

This book should be required reading for each and every American. This book should be taught in each and every high school history class in America. This book is America. The great, the good, the bad, and the ugly truths. This book not only encapsulates the African-American journey but the evolution of American society. I want to personally thank a talk show host Bomani Jones for mentioning this book on his program ESPN's "The Right Time". I didn't know that this book existed. It peaked my curiosity and it became the best book I have every read. Subsequently I have purchased several books for my family and friends and to a person they feel the same way that I do about this book. It will make you laugh. It will make you angry. It will make you cry. It will make you feel pround. But most most importantly it will make you feel something.Read full review

This is an excellent book and should be required reading for all high school students. The documented presentation and description of the Great Migration gives the reader a poiniant understanding of the Jim Crow South and the treachery, violence, and oppression that terrorized Southern African Americans leading to 7 decades of flight from the racial caste system of the South to settle in cities in the North, Midwest, and West. The American acknowledgement and embrace of this history will go a long way in exposing and counteracting the resurgence of this mindset in contemporary American Society.
