LGB's 2045 electric boxcab is the earliest of several versions of this GE 2/4 slant rod locomotive from the Swiss Raetian Railroad. As with most 4-digit LGB production, the brown locomotives were made in West Germany and are top quality. Note that some copies were "special" editions with gold leav hand-signed initials of LGB's founder, Ernst Richter. Some shady sellers might try to make you believe this edition is collectible or more valuable, and many years ago they were, but to most sellers don't even notice the initials and the boxes never had any special markings. This locomotive is mid-sized as LGB units go, has excellent pulling power, and is well geared for good low-speed performance. European triple lights adjust for correct forward/rearward operation, and the pantograph can be switched on for catenary operation. The engine is quiet and like most LGB units, is very water-resistant. The prototype slant-rod drive is fun to watch and adds a lot to the attractiveness of this engine. The size of the locomotive lends itself to use with both the smaller 2-axle narrow gauge cars and the larger 4-axle bodie cars. A later five-digit version was made in the green color, but these brown units are plentiful and can be had in good condition for under 300 dollars. There are several different roof paint styles. The early units have dark frosted edges, and some can be quite black. Later ones are usually plain silver. Problems to look for: The model has walking platforms on both sides of the roof that ofen come unglued and my be missing. The glue can also let loose on the windows, and one or more may be missing. These don't tend to have problems with broken side rods as the drive mechanism is though the wheels and not the rods. I've never seen one with bad electronics and the lantern bulbs are easily replaceable. Read full review

A solid, well detailed model of the RhB GE 2/4 Elektrolok. An excellent runner at all speeds. Pantographs are manually actuated, unlike later versions of this model. The rear pantograph is even fully functional, capable of picking up power from overhead catenary lines. The pushrod assemblies are single piece, which isn't perfectly accurate but works for the purposes of this model as there are no internal drivecams inside the cab for the vertical pushrod linkages.
