Actually using real B-29s (one of which could fly) was impressive and made the movie worth watching. The story line is very predictable, the characters are too superficial, and little time is spent developing their backgrounds, which is a pity. So many technical issues are ignored or dismissed without explanation that it becomes unbelievable. Essentially, this is the "Flight of the Phoenix" if Disney had made it - not exactly gritty or realistic. It has the potential for a good remake, but it would have to be done as a period piece, possibly set in the 1960s or early 1970s.

If you are a fan of World War II airplanes, here is a great movie. It is also wonderful for teaching children how to be tolerant of other people of other races, especially when you don't understand their language. In addition, it was one of the few Disney-style movies of that era where the kids did not make all the adults look like idiots, all the time. There was good interplay between the French missionary, the gambling loser and two orphans who get stranded on an isolated island. All in all, a great family night film.
Have always loved this movie. Very family friendly
