The Korean War was a war that needed to be fought. The South Korean government needed help to defend its self the North Korea, which had been trying to take control of it. North Korea was a communistic country and wanted to to control South Korea as well. The North was strongly backed by China, and China wanted to have all of Asia to be under communistic rule. The government of South Korea wanted to live under a free regime and turned to the United Nations nations for help. The United States drew some Division that were in Japan and sent them to aide in defense of South Korea. The North drove forward and pushed the forces defending the South down to the South-east corner of Korea, where they had to make a terrific defensive action to keep from being driven into the ocean. The communist forces of the North had taken control of the South Korean capitol Seoul and all the rest of the major cities of Korea as well. The delaying tactics of the South Korean forces and the forces of the U.N. troops lasted long enough until more forces could be landed. The United States had the majority forces in Korea at that time and with the air power by the flights from Japan and the flights from the carriers brought up to help, were the contributing factors that helped give the air superiority to the South. General MacArthur was asked to lead the peace keeping forces of the United Nations and restore South Korea back to where the two nations were divided at when the conflict began which was around the 38th parrallel. He first reinforced the troops that were at the south-east end of Korea, at Pousan, and then make a daring attack behind the enemy at Inchon. Inchon was just at the doorstep of Seoul, and this would cut-off the North Korean forces and put them between the South Korean forces building up and starting to breakout from the southeast corner(Pousan). The DVD tells of the events as they unfold, from the beginning to the end, and are told by people that were there at the time. The people that are telling the stories are those, who were there back in the early 50's by a series that took place every week on a television program named, The Big Picture. The interviews are those of people who returned from Korea back in the 50's and the story is told by the Big Picture series. It goes on to tell of the country changing hands back and forth between the Noth and South and the involvement of China as well. The Truce Talks go back and forth and take years to achieve some kind of an agreement. This really gives a persective of the struggles not only in the fighting but also the truce talks as well. You can really feel for the people in the everyday struggles of staying alive and of the brave men who stood up to odds of 10 or 20 to one. The waves of endless human attackers and the conditions that the fighting took place in. It's a long, but yet very interesting look at the Korean War. You really have to look up to the guys that stood up to that. They were brave and muchly overlooked people and deserve a Thank You for their courage and steadfastness. I would recommend that everyone take a look at what transpired in Korea in the early 50's and not only the struggles of the soldiers, but the vast numbers of misplaced people and orphanages supported by the soldiers and people of the U.N. Take a look and see how things were in the Korean War. It's money well spent!Read full review
This is a series of documentaries made during and shortly after the Korean conflict, and well worth the time it takes to be a view them. If the Korean War seems like ancient history, these documentaries will show you what it was like to fight in the cold winters and the enemy . Very worthwhile!
