Large format lenses can live on after they are repurposed. Such is the life of the Kodak Aero Ektar 178 mm f/2.5 Lens. originally found in large WWII aerial cameras, they now live on repurposed to medium and large format cameras, like the 4x5 Speed Graphic. The Speed graphic has a Focal Plane shutter, meaning it doers not require a shutter mounting with the lens, and since the Kodak Aero Ektar 178 mm f/2.5 lens has no shutter, it is a perfect match. Fast at 2.5, this makes for interesting short depth-of-field photos, especially portraits. This is a desirable and sought after lens.
I bought this lens because it is fast wide open, which I need for wet plate collodion. Unfortunately, like most lenses, it is not sharp until you stop it down a couple stops. At f/2.5 I don't really think it is acceptable. I will work with it a bit more, but I would not say it is my go-to lens. I have heard it is great for film work. But I don't use it for that.
