There is more to a set of speakers than simply listening to your favorite tunes. Speakers are supposed to immerse you in the music, make you one with it. For what its worth, your time is valuable and so when your listening to your music, it means you are spending your time doing that. Why on earth would you waste time or money? Klipsch has the answer to your entire dilema. A dual 8" subwoofer, for starters, is absolutely maddening to think comes in a set of computer speakers. The satelites (another term for speakers) have a tweeter and a woofer for incredible accurate sound. Heres my honest take for all the possible buyers of this system; Do you want an accurate representation of what you listen to on multiple devices and do you want your room to be filled with undistorted quality sound? Then this is absolutely an option to consider. Side by side with a Z-5500 by Logitech, the mids and highs were so much more present, and the lows aren't as insanely overpowering and boomy as the Z-5500. Overall the only issue with these speakers is that when you turn the volume knob, the volume number can sometimes jump around, and if you turn the subwoofer up too loud, it can sound slightly distorted. Aside those 2 issues its absolutely incredible what these speakers are capable of.Read full review

For me, listening to music, watching movies, and playing games using the combination of these Klipsch 5.1's and a very good PCI soundcard (SB X-Fi) in my PC has been as close to aural nirvana for me (ok - it also became a bigger nuisance for the wife). I've had some trepidation getting this set given feedback about its propensity for overheating and failure (see stpeteshepherd's review also). I took the leap and bought a used set and immediately invested in the cooling kit sold here at eBay. BEST PC AUDIO investment ever for me. I've owned PC speakers from Cambridge Soundworks, Creative Labs, Logitech, BenQ, Altec Lansing, Polk, Advent - NONE of these compare to the Klipsch. I'll let the techies talk about specs - I cared more about what I actually hear so here's my layman approach to testing: Use my trusty test CD's with songs that will test the speakers' ability to handle dynamic highs and lows, mids and overall sound clarity and quality. The CD's have been around for a while and I've used them to do tests on all the speakers and sound cards I've had and still have. Spies - Music of Espionage (all songs - this CD actually comes with a warning that it could ruin speakers if you're not careful), Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra - The Great Fantasy Adventure (themes to Conan the Barbarian and Jurassic Park, Cybergenesis), Keb' Mo' - Just like You (Just Like You), Steely Dan - Two Against Nature, Manhattan Transfer - Birdland and On the Boulevard, Los Lonely Boys - Senorita, Karl Jenkins - Adiemus and Kayama. Movies: Iron Man 2, Expendables 1, Planet Earth - From Pole to Pole. I kept the 3 settings flat at '0.' Overall volume level was set at 40. The result: unrivaled clarity even when the songs had bass guitars and drums 'thumping' in rhythm. - The finger snaps in Spies''Kiss Me' sounded like somebody was actually snapping fingers next to my ear. The background bass on these test songs would make the subs on my older speakers distort badly especially in portions where the bass guitar and bass drum sounds thump in rhythm. Vocal quality is equally superb. Explosions - the bomb! I can actually hear and understand clearly dialogues by Stallone, Statham, and Lundgren. Iron Man was flying by me and I could clearly hear the cackle of Mickey Rourke's nuclear whip thing. Writing about it does not compare to what I heard but I think you all get the point. Oh, I played Diablo 3 as well and had to crank the volume down to 35 so as not to incur the wrath of the Wifelem :-). It was much more immersive experience hearing all the ambient sounds more clearly without using a headset. The cooling kit - which is essentially a fan hookup installed inside the sub - does not produce any audible background noise. Sound quality is absolutely 5 out of 5 and outperforms all the speakers I have owned and can afford. Klipsch miscalculated by not recognizing and addressing the heat issue which you'll also read in online forums. Fortunately for me and for those who still have a working set, there is a relatively cheap and effective solution available and a caring enthusiast here within the eBay community.Read full review
It has now been ten years since the 2001 arrival of Klipsch's first 5.1 personal audio system. Yet the flat black ProMedia still looks sharp, and performs at the top of the list of personal audio systems. It requires analog inputs, rather than digital, but if you have a high quality sound card, you have already paid for that circuitry. Klipsch put that money saved into nice quality electronics and speakers. The ProMedia 5.1 built on the previous 4.1 THX system, using similar BASH technology to pack almost 500 watts in a small sub enclosure. The design produces the accuracy of a Class A design, with much better efficiency and less heat than a Class A amplifier. The BASH design has efficiency like a Class D, without the total harmonic distortion (THD) found in Class D amplifiers. While many home and car audio electronics use an inexpensive amplifier-on-a-chip, this system has 6 individual amplifier boards, with 4 output MOSFETs each. Strengths: 1) Klipsch's horn design for the tweeter provides clear highs and high efficiency. That means more volume per watt of amplifier power. 2) The dual 8" sub with tuned enclosure provides accurate bass. It is not as powerful as some computer speaker subs that are tuned for volume rather than for a flatter response curve. This is a great sub for music. If you want to use it for games, you might add a Bass Shaker (tactile transducer) so you can feel the explosions. 3) The satellite speakers are THX certified. The enclosures are more rigid than their successors, the ProMedia Ultra 5.1 speakers. More rigid means more accurate at higher volume, without the enclosure resonating and adding its own color to the music. Their grills are also more rigid, with pins not as easy to snap. Weaknesses: 1) After 8 to 10 years of use, if the original filter capacitors have not been replaced, be prepared to have a hum develop at some point. (If a hum develops, just four or five small capacitors need to be upgraded. The advantage of having a system that has been around several years is that by now kits and schematics are available online.) 2) Klipsch underestimated the heat that would build up, even with the efficient design. Sections get up to 190 degrees when turned on (even at no volume), charring a small circuit board. This can lead to power supply failure. Hundreds of these systems have been successfully modified with cooling. While the need for repair is a weakness, the ability to repair it is a positive. Before you buy a Logitech or Creative Labs or other system, check if you will be able to even open the sub to repair it in the future. I bought a Logitech sub, and it was sealed in such a way it had to be destroyed in order to open the enclosure. I know of literally hundreds of owners of the Klipsch ProMedia 5.1 THX and Ultra systems that cooled or had their systems repaired. 3) The remote control is wired, not wireless, and may develop a hesitation to adjust volume when the dial is turned. The newer Ultra 5.1 box works on these systems, and does not have that issue. Summary: Two things combined to cause this system to still be cherished by owners, and repaired if a problem occurs. A) The high end personal audio market shrank away in the past few years, and B) the Klipsch ProMedia 5.1 system still matches or beats the audio performance of brand new systems. The Klipsch ProMedia 5.1 systems are missed in the new personal/computer audio market, but can be found and enjoyed secondhand on eBay.Read full review
This is my second set of the Klipsch 5.1 THX. The first set overheated after about 5yrs of buying them used. The amp in the sub blew which is a known problem with these so be sure to search for the cooling upgrade kit sold on here. If your like me and play your music loud the amp does get VERY HOT. This is a small problem thats easy to avoid and would not discourage me from buying a second set because they sound amazing and hit hard. How does this product compare to others? It does not compare because for the price and what your get these are in a class of their own! Especially since they are not made anymore its nice to still find a used set. Keep the amp cool, off when not in use, and get the cooler upgrade
Have been familiar with Klipsch speakers since high school. Had friends that had them that Klipsch speakers. Have the Heresy for my home stereo. The Promedia speakers delivered the quality sound that I know Klipsch speakers are capable of. Cant believe they do not make the 5.1 systems anymore. They really should start making them again. Definitely worth the investment.
