Before rising to celebrity status on shows broadcast on the Food Network and Travel Channel, Anthony Bourdain, a chef trained at the Culinary Institute Of America, decided to give us an insight into the Culinary World. We learn some rather unsavory facts :behind the scene goings on in the Restaurant Business - and folks we are not just talking about your local hole in the wall....but the top Restaurants...the ones we dress up for on those special occasions where Oysters served on a bed of squid ink pasta and champagne are derigueur! If you know Bourdain, then you'll understand his style. Not a man to hold anything back, he gives us a frank memoir of years working in the business - we learn about a life of sex, drugs, alcohol - the exploits he has seen and been a part of. In true Bourdain style - he is as open about his own behavior as that of his peers - in his personal life as well as career wise. It is funny and well written, but at the same time, leaves us with that rather uneasy feeling about the places we chose to eat...he gives us tips about our food choices, for example: we think that sunday brunch will be nice, out with th e family enjoying some nice quality food...only now we learn that brunch is often the restaurants way of getting rid of all the food that is going stale or about to pass its peak!! It is as much an expose as a guide to getting the best and worst from out eating out experiences! If you prefer not to think about what you are eating - maybe not the book for you, but for those who want a truly entertaining, funny and eye opening read, this could be the book for you!Read full review
The book arrived relatively quickly in good packaging. The only noticeable flaws are a slight center fold on the top of the front cover that extends about throughout the entirety book (not very noticeable in the latter pages of the book but present nonetheless), yellowing of the pages (to be expected), and more inconspicuous creases/folds on the edges of both the front and back cover. There was no writing in my copy, the book stays relatively flat, and there was no old book odor noticeable. The covers still have great color with no fading. Very good value and amazing read so far. Highly recommend this book if you're interested in the history of a phenomenal chef.

My highest recommendation! Great insights into how a great restaurant is run, how a kitchen functions with a high-level chef, and what made Anthony tick. Accessible read for anyone: I have no “foodie” background and I could follow this.
