Great scenes throughout, fabulous acting, funny, always seat of your pants moving, great music with an almost never ending song in your mind after viewing. The vast numbers of tanks, trucks, half-tracks and soldiers moving in almost chaotic directions in one scene is so much that you have to back-track and pause to take it all in! A film that today far exceeds its essence when first released. I have the VHS, which is not quite the sharpness qualities that the DVD has. The sound is better as well.

A slick tongue-n'-cheek comedy about a group of American Army soldiers in France who go on a private expedition behind German lines to rob a bank. It is late 1944 and a group of soldiers who have been at the front of the American spearhead in France since D-day, capture a German Colonel who is supposedly transferring papers to the rear. While questioning him, Sgt. Kelly (Clint Eastwood), discovers that he is actually transferring a shipment of 14,000 gold bars worth $16M. Kelly plans to try to steal this shipment, and the exploits of this caper are hilarious. This movie is filled with talent. Telly Savallas (Big Joe)is the Sgt. in charge; Don Rickels (Crap Game) in charge of supply and a "fence"; Donald Sutherland (Odd Ball) who has three Sherman tanks with his band of Gypsy style "druggie types", and a host of others, go to war for profit in this hilarious caper. All awhile, the General (Carol O'Connor), is on their trail because he thinks that this offensive is a renegade company of soldiers who have found a break in the German forces and this is his chance for glory. A very funny movie. Of course, the entire premise is foolish, but set in warfare, you can't help but pull for the "good guys". You'll enjoy this one.Read full review
14,000 bars of gold 30 miles behind German lines fails to slow down Clint Eastwood, Telly Savalas and Don Rickles in this WW II adventure. Though at times juvenile, the group of American GI s decide to go for the gold. Their hands off, never around officer makes it easy for them to "disappear" for a few days to try and fight through to the gold, had head to Swiss territory. Enjoyable night of entertainment!

This is a great movie putting a lighter side on all the WWII movies that came out after the war through the 60's. This is a not so serious view of a group of renegades with one thing on thier mind - liberating gold 40 miles behind enemy lines. Kelly (Clint Eastwood) pulls favors from all the guys who were under his command at one time assembling a crazy cast of characters who are bound and determined to push through the german fronts to get to a town where the gold is being housed. With Donald Sutherland playing "Odd-ball", Telly Savalas playing "Big Joe", Don Rickles playing "crap game" and a bunch of other guys you know, this movie will never fail to entertain if you are into those "movies for guys who like movies" mentality. It is a long one with an intermission cut from where the original picture needed projector reels changed. My dad told me he watched this movie during the Vietnam era while stationed on a in between in Germany. He said all the guys loved it there and I can see why still to this day.Read full review
