This book is a very warming story based on the life of a 10 year old girl by the name of Opal, her preacher father, and a dog she finds and names Winn-Dixie. Opal and her father had just moved to Naomi, Florida and it is through Winn-Dixie where she makes many new friends. I don't want to give the whole story away, but it is definitely a book that adults would love as well. I highly recommend it.
What isn't to like about a story of a little girl and her rag-a-muffin dog named after the grocery store - Winn Dixie. Opal is a child who brings out the best in an entire community. As a perfect 3rd grade reader, this book is delightful and each reader can find common ground with the main character who has a challenging life, but we can all learn from Opal to look for the good in all things that we encounters. I highly recommend this book, even to adults for an easy read or to 3rd, 4th, & 5th graders who will enjoy the story line.
One of my very favorite young children's chapter books. Such a wonderful story (the movie took it completely the wrong direction:( - totally missed the point of the story.) And if you are dog lovers, it means even more.
