All of the AX series of processors are part of the ToneWorks line of products from Korg. The processing power and modeling the REMS circuit is the main advantage. This system is different than others from competitors, with particular ability to pack a huge amount of processing into miniaturized packages. For the AX10B in particular, which is the focus of this review, it is no wider than three standard sized stomp boxes. Your feet control two large pressure buttons and an expression pedal. The two buttons used to switch programs and engage the tuner/mute functions. The expression pedal is assignable to functions including volume, modulation level and effect level. The first thing you come across is the five level and tone controls along the top of the unit's face plate. The first is the input gain/mid frequency sweep for the semi-parametric equalizer. After that are bass, middle and treble tone adjustment, and final output/noise reduction (gate) level. The remaining controls are set up in order of the signal chain To the far left side, below the alpha-numeric LED display, is what is called the pre-FX. These are controlled by small rubber buttons and processes the unaffected signal with compression, distortion or octave generator (only one at a time). Of the three, for bass guitar, compression is the most valuable. The distortion is not a tube emulator and the octave generator is very good, but tracking is less effective at the lowest frequencies. The first large rotary selector dial is where the REMS modeling come into play. This is called the AMP TYPE, and for sake of simplicity selects from 11 preset amplifier model emulations. If you are playing through a tube preamp stage on you rig, and using the AX10B in your effects loop, the combination of your tube circuit and any tube emulator on the AX10B is redundant and too "warm". In this case use the "EQ" position on the rotary selector, bypassing tube/REMS modeling and running the pedal as a an equalizer and effects pedal board. With the AX10B inline to your rig, the AMP TYPE is worth playing around with. Once you select the amplifier the next two rotary dials allow for use of MODULATION (chorus, flange, tremolo, filtering, pitch shifting, etc.) and AMBIENCE effects (reverberation and delay). Modulation effects can be adjusted for speed and depth. Ambience is only depth adjustable. The next set of rubber button controls are for setting master level, writing user programs into memory patches, assigning expression pedal function and tapping the delay tempo. Obviously there are details to the operation that need to be absorbed by you to get the full benefit of this unit. For myself and many others, the use of multiple stomp boxes is simply inconvenient. The AX10B is by no means the top of the line for Korg. I personally use it more as a single piece effects pedal with all the bass effects I could ever want. Yes this thing can go from mild to wild. The convenience is the best feature, the very quiet nature of REMS processing makes use of the built in noise gate almost unnecessary. Now this unit is no longer manufactured, so a used one is what you will find (pricing typically from $35-$75) w/o power supply. I have not heard of one failing electronically. These are made of plastic with a metal back plate. They are remarkably durable and solid for a plastic unit. Compact, powerful, reliable, quiet and a safe bet.Read full review
