George Carlin's album FM & AM (1972LP/2000CD) is considered by many persons his career-defining release. The material Carlin presents here shows his well-documented efforts to redefine himself as a comedian after being fired from a Las Vegas venue for using a four-letter word in his act. The first part of the album is edgy and contains Carlin's very early efforts at counter-culture material, while the second part contains the remnants of his more mainstream lounge-act material. The first track, "Shoot," represents the earliest invention of what will become his keystone routine "Seven Dirty Words You Can Never Say on Television." On this recording, his older, less-rehearsed material is much funnier than his new style. AM & FM is worth the price for any person who is interested in studying the development of George Carlin's comedic style. Any aspiring stand-ups would certainly find listening to the album well worth their time. That being said, if you are looking for really good, vintage George Carlin, his later release, Class Clown, is probably a better way to spend your money, but FM & AM is, nonetheless, a significant transitional effort.Read full review
