I couldn't wait to read this book after seeing the movie, "Julie & Julia." What I hate first off is she changed the names of some people in her life. Maybe they didn't want to be seen in her book or maybe is was to keep them discreet and not invade their privacy. Who knows? I expected to read more about her blog when recreating the recipes in "MTAOFC". She writes more about her boring daily life than the recipes. Life is boring enough without reading about someone elses. What gives, Julie? I guess I expected it to be a bit more like the movie in the way of her cooking and learning. But instead I feel like I'm reading someones boring daily day to day crap that we all go through. I thought she had cooked more than she led on in the movie. I know the movie is never the same as the book but I expected it to be a bit more on contact with the movie in this case. Seems to me they ate more take out than actually making Julia's recipes. No wonder Julia was a "pill" about Julie's blog. After reading this book, One cannot blame Julia Child for being upset. I see it as a mockery of her years of hard work and efferts. I guess I was hoping to read something more exciting. I love the tidbits about Julia and Paul Child's lives but I don't like her language or how she really thought Julia herself would appreciate her blog if this is how she did in fact write it. I am not yet enjoying this book and I'm almost 1/2 way through it. Sorry Julie Powell. I'm having second thoughts on reading her knew book, "Cleaving". Will see! I was hoping to give this book a better rating but in all honesty I can't. If Julie Powell did in fact cook all 524 recipes in one year of this book, than I have to honestly congradulate her. That is in fact a very hard thing to do in one year. If one is committed.Read full review
I was very disappointed by this book. I love cooking, however, the book is from Julie Powell's perspective and has very little to do with Julia Child. Julie's point of view is very liberal, offensive, and honestly, not interesting (to me, at least, not for everyone). It was just personally not my type of book and not what I thought it would be. I did not enjoy reading about in-detail descriptions of harvesting bone marrow and the long line of cursings and tantrums that followed. I'm sure Julie Powell is a wonderful person who should be acknowledged for taking on such a challenging cooking task, but this book was not for me. Hope others enjoy. This is one book where the movie is definitely better.
Simply said, what a great book. It seems to have been written from the heart. I grew up watching Julia Child and so enjoyed her kitchen "antics". But never once guessed that she wasn't born in France much less just assumed that she had probably grown up cooking. In this book you learn the truth about the "real" Julia Child and her life as well as the story of Julie and her husband. As I said earlier, it appears to have been written from the heart. If you are a fan of Julia Child's it is definitely worth the read ... and worth giving as a gift ... along with a bottle of wine. I've already bought several and plan to do just that as Christmas gifts. Enjoy!
This is a great story! The characters are really good! They have Julia Child down pat! I highly recommend it!!
