First of all even though this has a white cover it is the same brown cover album many of us like me had on vinyl in the early 70s. I wanted the brown cover cd but could not. This is labeled the Original London Concept Recording. I think the confusion comes because of re-master recordings of the brown album. That being said: this is brilliant music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and a brilliant piece of music history. There were a few concept albums at the time known as Rock Opera or with a Classical/Rock lyrics fusion. This is the only true Rock Opera then and to this day. I say this because it has Rock and Classical music with a story line and dialogue like historical opera over the last few centuries. The music is BRILLIANT with all genres Rock Classical Blues Jazz Gospel to fit the proper scene, singing that is dramatic and moving as well as light and easy, lyrics by Tim Rice that to some were and may be controversial if listened to with an open mind even if one is religious are not out of the realm of possibility in context. The story follows the Bible accounts of the last week of Jesus' life passion crucifixion exactly. Judas Jesus the apostles the people the authorities all had questions and were thinking and saying things not recorded in the Bible not exactly as here but with a modern twist shall we say. This is every bit as brilliant and moving as Messiah by Handel and the Passions of JS Bach; a modern twist to an age old story. When I got this I listened to it twice the same day. I rarely do that. It is every bit as good now as it was then. It has stood the test of time these 50 years. I think I like it more now because my musical ear and mind have been honed more over the years and my understanding of the story has evolved. This is something every serious collector of Rock Music need for their collection.Read full review

A remarkable rock opera! The lyrics and music are outstanding. Decades later, I'm still awed by every aspect of the soundtrack. My local radio station played excerpts from the album on Easter Sunday and I was reminded just how fabulous the collection is and was moved to seek and purchase my very own copy. I appreciate that it chronicles a historical event in a modern genre. Outstanding accolades to Tim Rice, Andrew Lloyd Webber and everyone involved in the production.

I spent a good deal of my adolescence driving around with my friends, cruising the hot spots of my small southern town, listening to and singing along with this soundtrack blaring on my 8 track player. Jesus Christ Superstar played a big role for my friends and for me during the early 70's. I have seen the play numerous times, and have purchased various versions of this rock opera, including the movie version. But to me, this is THE ultimate Jesus Christ Superstar soundtrack. Released as a concept album before the play ever hit the stage, this is the one that we old folks compare every other version to. This version contains terrific performances by hand-picked, top-notch musicians of the time as they ventured into the fairly new genre of rock opera. And these musicians did rock. There is no holding back, this is definitely a ROCK opera. No one since has given the performances of Murray Head and Ian Gillan (of Deep Purple) on this album. Ian Gillan (as Jesus) gives the performance of his lifetime, sending chills down your spine in such songs as 'Gethsemane' and 'The Temple'. Murray Head (Judas) gives a tremendous performance with 'Damned For All Time/Blood Money', "Heaven on Their Minds' and 'Superstar'. The other cast members are extremely talented also (including Yvonne Elliman as Mary Magdalene). I was overjoyed to be able to purchase this soundtrack on CD. The quality of the recording is excellent, nothing has been lost in the move from LP to CD. A libretto is even included in the CD. Yes, I still have my old LP copy of Jesus Christ Superstar. It's a little ragged from being listened to so much, and there are notes in the edges of the pages of the libretto, from noting the bible verses to trace exactly where Tim Rice's words came from. Sadly, I do not have my 8 track tape or even the 8 track player itself (all good things must come to an end, I guess). So, if you have never heard Jesus Christ Superstar, and are interested in listening to it for the first time, this is the version for you-start with the best! If you are a fan of REAL rock music and phenomenal vocals, this is the version for you! If you want to hear one of the first (and personally, I think the best) rock operas ever written, performed as it was meant to be, this is the one for you. Turn the volume up and enjoy!Read full review
I had this record album of J C Superstar back in 1972 and I must say this remaster of the recording is very close to the quality of the vinyl original. The vocals are superb, the Rock band and orchestra are phenominal and the writing and arranging by Andrew Lloyd Webber is tops! This original broadway cast is in my opinion the BEST recording of this rock opera. Ian Gillan (from Deep Purple) makes a terrific Jesus Christ along with Yvonne Elliman whos sweet powerful voice makes a great Mary Magdalene. From the first song to the last it holds your attention with great lyrics and wonderful music! This is not an album you want to play JUST at the holidays. I, being a fairly religious person back then, thought this was a musical done in very poor taste...Till I listened and saw the musical done live in my town. Knocked my socks off. The combination of the full orchestra and the rock band was tremendous!!! If you get a chance to see this on stage, DO IT!! You'll love it and oh yes....BUY THE CD!!! You will be glad you did.Read full review
I grew up listening to this as an LP back in the 70s but now I own it as CD. I was raised being taught the bible and having been raised in a Lutheran grade school I was taught the bible IN DEPTH so much so that when I was forced to attend Catholic High School (BISHOP MONTGOMERY, YOU WERE THE WORST 3 1/2 YEARS OF MY LIFE! THANKS FOR SHOWING ME THE LIES AND HYPOCRACY OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH! YOU PROVED TO ME THE LIE OF CHRISTIANITY AND THE LACK OF TOLERANCE THE CATHOLIC CHURCH IMPOSED ON US ALL FOR OVER 2000 YEARS!) so having read the story of Jesus Christ repeatedly and seeing all the spin I came to the realization that Jesus Christ Superstar was nothing more that a no nonsense portrayal of the life of Jesus before his crucifixion with no preaching or moral lesson. It was just a clean portrayal staying away from docrinal bending that the Catholic Church is so good at. Do not let my acid feeling towards organized religion cloud any judgement of this album or the play it was derived from. Of all the things in Cristianity this is one of the few good things to have come from it like few people that go by the word of a profit rather than worship a man like he was God like many "good" Christians. What ever happened to "thou shall have no other gods but me?" If anything this deserves a listening but keep in mind this CD is DARK in many ways. There is no hope, no uplifting story, and as Zappa would put it, "no fairies on strings." One can feel Judas's dispair for his turning Jesus in and his suicide really put a harsh on any good feelings you might have had toward the ending of the second album. There is no denominational stratifying in this album in any way. It was pure to the story as portrayed in the bible without political or social message. It plays on many feelings and covers the darkest parts of man's heart within the story. As far as music goes it was exellently scored and every song ties into one another perfectly not diverting the story in any way. This is a very long surviving album and rightly so. Nothing did the story of Jesus justice like this one. If you are an avid music collector this is one for your collection. On a final foot note I would like to say (off subject) Jesus had a relationship with Mary Magdelane even if she was a prostitue, get over it. Mary was another of his apostles and damn well could have had his children. What happened to forgiveness and redemption? Jesus's death was in vain because it did not better mankind, if anything his death led to the murder of millions in HIS name at the hands of the Catholic Church and almost 600 years of religon imposed ignorance. And to top it off many christians get the whole point of Jesus's teachings wrong, having faith IN Jesus will get you nothing! You got to have faith in yourself and stop worshiping a FALSE God (Jesus). There is only one God, not three. And the Bible was writtten by man and tailored to meet the doctrine of the Catholic Church, NOT GOD. When God Him, Her, Itself hands me a Bible with His, Her, Its name on it written by His, Her, Its hand I'll think otherwise. Time for the Catholic Church to tell the truth without lying to us. Odd how someone who learned to hate Cristianity would like this CD so much, huh? With all this I leave you with a wish for understanding to come with education, hope for mankind to become better than the sum of what we are with patience, and that the hatred for one another give way to love without rules or divine guidance. Let love rule!Read full review
