I have been a huge fan of the James Herriot novels since college. In fact, they played a part in my becoming a physician. I came across this book about "James Herriot", who was in reality Alf Wight, quite by accident. I immediately bought it, and when it arrived, could hardly put it down. Credit goes not so much to the author, who at times was a little too plodding and pedestrian, but instead to Mr. Wight's life itself. Can you imagine a man becoming one of the best-selling authors of his time, and yet continuing to work at a demanding and dangerous job. He earned millions with his writing, and still remained in his community, in the pre-Thatcher liberal government, with tax rates at 95% for high earners. The author figures he gave up over 40 million pounds to the government coffers! Alf took the time to sign autographs for fans up until a few weeks before he died. By all accounts a humble, caring, and generous man who had a startling gift for writing. If you enjoyed the Herriot books, you will enjoy this biography.Read full review
