I collect performances of the same work by different artists. I have the Caprices performed by Midori, Perlman, Accardo, and Ehnes. For sheer technical brilliance, I rank Ehnes first, followed by Midori. Ehnes's violin does not have the tonal qualities of Midori's Guarneri, but his perfect intonation and subtle interpretations of these 24 caprices are inspiring and mind-boggling for other violinists. This is the most dazzling technique one can imagine, with brisk tempos and clarity of execution that cannot be improved upon. I highly recommend this performance to all collectors of Paganini and other composers for virtuoso violin.
