I have a soft spot for pre-Sonic era Genesis games. It was a time when Sega was a distant underdog to the juggernaut Nintendo. The games before Sonic are, to me at least, the purest Genesis games. If you have no idea what that means, don’t worry, either do I. Buster Douglas Boxing is one of these games. It is actually a port from an arcade game that I am too lazy to look up. It is an obvious attempt to capitalize on the man who defeated Mike Tyson and since Tyson had his own boxing game on the NES, it showed that Sega was willing to tangle with Nintendo. Playing both Buster Douglas Boxing and the arcade version, the graphical difference is almost negligible. The arcade might be a little more detailed and colorful, but most probably won’t notice a big difference. The sprites are big, which was to show the Genesis superiority to the NES at the time. The music is fine, but you don’t play a boxing game for the music. The sounds relatively emulate the sounds of boxing gloves hitting flesh and bone. There are times where it could almost feel a critical blow to the face. This is a side scrolling boxing game. You have your jab, body jab, uppercut, hook, face block, and body block. Pretty basic, but it is an arcade style game running on 24 year old technology. This does make it a good game to pick up and play for a short duration without dealing with any load times and setup that current generation consoles have. There are different fighters you can choose from, but they are really aesthetic differences. I really didn’t notice too much of a difference in the fighters power or speed. Buster Douglas boxing is a decent boxing game for its time. By today’s standards it would be considered shallow and bare-bones. But considering the types of games that are becoming popular on tablets and such, this might not matter to most. Of course, Genesis enthusiasts like myself can appreciate this game for what it is. If you are looking for an in depth boxing simulator, you will not find it here. If you are looking for a game to pop in and beat the crap out of someone without too much hassle, Buster Douglas fits the bill.Read full review
