Massive overbuild in terms of driver construction --- The Differential-Drive Design (DDD) of the JBL GTI W series bass drivers is the highlight here. When DDD is combined with car audio functional requirements and some of the most advanced State-Of-The-Art speaker design features, more commonly found in the Project K2 series, this produces an awesome bass driver package. Features like the Aquaplus coating, kevlar impregnated cellulose cone and the one of the kind massive fin-shaped heat sink sets this bass driver's construction apart from the rest. The SQ is as good as the looks. Three areas this bass driver particularly excels in: (1) Articulation; (2) Bass Extension; (3) Power handling. There are a number of high-end car audio subwoofer that will do well in (2) & (3), but not many will excel in all the 3 categories of performance. The GTI W series comes in 3 sizes: 10", 12" & 15". The 12" version represents the best balance of the bunch, with sufficient cone area to drive the air mass to achieve good bass extension as well as SPL, but at the same time light-weight enough to respond quickly to transient signals. The 15" version is a bit too heavy to achieve all these goals in one design. The design brief was to put together a removable subwoofer unit(s) that sounds awesome in terms of SQ for daily drive and yet can be quickly dissembled and removed as required from the installation, when the car needs to shave weight on a track day. A bass reflex design has been chosen combined with a bass tube construction, which yields good bass extension and transient response from the W12GTI driver. Using WinISD Pro and the W12GTI Thiele-Small parameters to calculate the optimal enclosure size and reflex port requirements, modifications were made to a basic (gutted out) JBL 1241T bass tube to extend the bass port dimensions to meet the design requirements. The W12GTI driver was reverse mounted to maximise the cavity space of the enclosure. Specially packed activated carbon has been applied to increase the virtual enclosure volume 'visible' to the driver load. The result, is a jaw-dropping performance in one of the most package subwoofer design. The complete system consists of two of these modified W12GTI bass tubes, driven by ICE-Powered amplifiers. During audition and driver run-in, the W12GTIs were paired with a high-end home audio setup, which includes a pair of JBL Project K2 speakers. The W12GTI felt right at home and have no issue integrating into the system to provide awesome bass support. Most car audio subwoofer won't be able to do this because their transient response is simply no match to the K2's speed and power and will sound muddled and isolated in such contrast. Not so with the W12GTI, which actually showed great potential in being incorporated into a high-end subwoofer design for home audio! Of course, there will be less design constraints in terms of size for a home audio setup. The bass performance from the W12GTI will astonish many and will put a big smile on even the most demanding audiophiles for sure, assuming that its current needs are met with the appropriate amplification setup. The only aspect I wish JBL would consider, is to go with Nd-DDD design and make the driver more compact and lighter, akin to those designs for JBL Professional. These drivers as good SQ as they are now, are simply a bit too heavy for a permanent install...Read full review
