This album is a roots rock/folk rock classic. On his second solo album, Ry covers Johnny Cash ("Hey Porter"), Elvis ("Money Honey"), Leadbelly ("On A Monday") and many more seminal artists. While anyone can cover these artists, noone could make it sound as good as Ry Cooder does. His mastery of the guitar (in all of it's forms) is amazing and he really shows his stuff on this album. More than just a virtuoso piece though, this album demonstrates Ry's true affinity for the singers and songwriters that he is showcasing here. "Into The Purple Valley" is a must for fans, and a great starting place for those just being introduced to Ry Cooder!
One of the tracks, "On A Monday", is my all time favorite Ry Cooder song. Rest of the CD is very unremarkable. Audio quality is very good. Doesn't have the harshness of many CDs from this time period. Could be the type of music. Could be dynamic range limiters. Don't know. But audio quality is above average.

This CD is one of my favorites by Ry Cooder. With such memorable cuts as, "On a Monday" and "Vigilante Man" . Leadbelly and Woodie Guthrie would approve of Cooder's rendition. He is certainly a master of his craft. His music is expressive. I believe he has the soul of one of the early Delta Blues men! This album was originally recorded on analog tape prior to modern noise reduction technologies. Therefore, this CD preserves, as closely as possible, the sound of the original recording.

Still got the LP from my younger years! Nice to listen to the cd in my car! Ry Cooder is WAY too under-rated in Canada for his history and truth! Deserves way more for his playin', history, and identification with others!

This is the first cd I bought from this artist and I was hooked. Have purchased many more and have enjoyed them all.
