Il lavoro svolto si e concentrato intorno alle conseguenze scaturite dall'introduzione della "fair value accounting" nel sistema contabile italiano, da sempre tradizionalmente ancorato al principio del costo storico. Dopo una prima attenta analisi delle principali differenze fra i due principi contabili e stata posta particolare attenzione alla cosiddetta gerarchia delle fonti del fair value, utilizzata nella disclosure dei bilanci delle maggiori societa italiane capitalizzate (cosi come previsto dal nuovo principio contabile internazionale IFRS 13). Mentre, da un punto di vista puramente empirico, la ricerca condotta ha cercato di spiegare l'eventuale correlazione tra la recente crisi finanziaria delle grandi aziende italiane (testimoniata da un'ampia volatilita di valori in bilancio) e la corrispondente presenza negli stessi bilanci di ingenti strumenti finanziari valutati proprio al fair value. I risultati cosi ottenuti sono stati infine analizzati statisticamente in modo da indagare il fenomeno per cercare di dare una risposta alla domanda che in molti si pongono: "l'introduzione del principio contabile del fair value ha contribuito alla recente crisi finanziaria?"
