I first became aware of Buck O'Neil when he appeared in the PBS Baseball series and was captivated by his humor, his positive attitude, his love for the game and his knowledge of baseball. I have wanted to know more about Buck since that time and when I saw the book offered on Ebay, I jumped at the chance to bid on it. When you read this book, you feel as if you are sitting on Buck's front porch on a summer evening listening to a man who had every right to be bitter about not getting the chance to play in the major leagues, share his experiences and insights into another time. But the title says it all as far as Buck's philosophy on life and his unfailing positive attitude. He was a man whose strength and feeling self worth came from within, a courageous man who always assumed good intent on the part of others first, even in the face of the extreme prejudice that he and others suffered, a consistently upbeat, optimistic man who was simply incapable of being bitter. That he was not voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame last year, if not for his lifelong service to the game of baseball alone aside from his success on the field as a player, coach, scout and manager, is a true tragedy. I would encourage every true baseball fan to read this book. You will be enchanted by this look through the eyes of a man who should be a role model for us all.Read full review
what a eye opening book! well written and compelling and even society sad at some points. This book should be made into a movie.. After reading this book, i bought an autograghed buck baseball and was going to KC to the negro baseball hall of fame to meet him. Unfortunetly he passed before i could make this happen.. I feel i missed out meeting an outstanding human being.
