Long before ECW or Mick Foley, The Sheik set the standard in hardcore mayhem. This movie gives a bit of a glimpse into 1970's Detroit area wrestling featuring The Sheik gimmick and a few of his feuds. More documentary than movie, there are some great behind the scenes shots and shoots from a few of the stars of the time, who slid in and out of kayfabe during the filming. The only 'plot' that exists is that of an anti-Sheik organization dubbed 'STS'(Stop the Sheik) who's aim is to end his tactics. Whether purposely or not there is little storyline; more match clips and interviews makes this fun to watch, along with a cheesey garage-band-soundtrack that adds a certain flavor to this film. You get to see some of the great stars in their hey-day such as Dusty Rhodes, Andre the Giant, the Funks, Ox Baker, The Grand Wizard, Eddie Creatchman and many others. Plus you'll witness The Sheik bloody his opponents with foreign objects, and on occasion, 'throw fire' into their faces. It's certainly not Verne Gagnes' 'The Wrestler' fiction movie,(which was hard to stay interested in....) but more an early version of 'Beyond the Mat' with a little Sheik storyline sprinkled throughout. If your a fan of old-school wrestling and want to re-live some of the phenomenon that was The Sheik, this is a nice little time-capsule of the time period.Read full review
It's a 5-star product, but mainly for those of us that were entertained by local professional wrestling on TV in the 1960s. It's a trip down memory lane.
