If you ever wanted to really understand what it means when an author mentions water, falling in mud, flying, eating with others, etc and other literary symbols, then this is an excellent book to read. Some of the chapters seem to go on and on, but he keeps reaffirming each symbol (which is arranged to be each chapter) to the reader and offering examples found in many literary works. He also lets you know that the symbols in his book are 1) not always what he says they are and 2) the symbols in the book aren't the definite complete list. There are many other symbols, like fire, he doesn't cover; but he wants to give you the basics for reading something, stepping back, and catching what the real meaning to the text is. I recommend this to anyone that would like to get more out of their reading experience, and those who have, or run a book club. I enjoyed it.Read full review
I bought this book in order to read it for an independent reading project in my Honors World Literature class, and it was a great book to choose. The author was funny, yet descriptive at the same time, and there was a lot of information to comment on. It is a good length, though the pages are average in thickness and in durability. The only problem I see with this book is that it may be hard for people of a lesser reading ability to complete, as some of the language and grammar it contains is difficult or advanced.
Although the title seems trite and boring, the minute you start reading this book ("that milquetoast?"), you will KNOW that it's purely awesome. This book examines so many examples of symbolism, motifs, biblical and non-biblical themes, and, for further interest, "romance". Although it doesn't explore every topic, and although some topics overlap a little (Greek mythology is continuously emphasised), the book is broad enough to cover the most common themes in books we read as high school and college students. The great thing about the book is that whenever a story is mentioned, a concise summary is given, so even though I have not read at least half the stories mentioned, I had a pretty good idea on what Foster is saying. Foster writes to us as though he is sitting in our room having a nice chat over a cup of tea. He poses the same questions I wonder about. There is no "degrading" or "superior" voice in his writing, as I had expected. To all students out there who wanna burn this book... don't! Read it!!! It Rocks. At the very most, don't burn it... recycle it!Read full review
If your looking to move into the deep end of literary perspective, plunge into this book. The author is witty, experienced, and constantly entertaining as he explains how to pick out literary elements such as motifs, themes, symbols, narrative styles, etc. I bought the book because I am an English major, and it continues to prove its worth.
I bought this book for my AP Literature class. I like this book on how it's new and not used up also its cheap. It really help me understand how literature works and tell me things I never notice before but after reading it, it tells how if a story have a dinner scene in it doesn't just mean a dinner sometimes it meant more or "If It's A Square It's a Sonnet".
