I read this book ages ago but recently re-read a copy and forgot how good it was! Ellie's mother-in-law is back, and everyone has just discovered that her marriage was not legal to Ben's Jewish father due to religious differences. This puts the household in an uproar because the older Mrs. Haskell has decided to live with her son, Ben, until his father comes back crawling with an apology and another proposal. Ellie is driven to distraction by this martyred woman and finds to her surprise that she isn't the only one suffering from a severe affliction of mother-in-law trouble. Three other women in the town have similar problems and when they meet by accident at a local pub they fantasize over how to murder their mother-in-laws. What better way to spend an evening? When they finish their make-believe plotting they depart, feeling better but a little guilty at the same time. However, not long afterwards one women's mother-in-law dies by one of the methods they were discussing. Just when Ellie is getting the hang of liking her mother-in-law, the elder Mrs. Haskell's life is put in danger. Drastic times call for drastic measures and Ellie has to find a killer before her mother-in-law leaves by way of a body bag! Ms. Cannell writes the most endearing books. I have read them all and they get better and better with each novel. If you love a great English mystery, then read Cannell. She never fails to entertain.Read full review
