I had read this book back in the day when I was selling puppies (you would think that was an easy job) at a small mom & pop pet store. They had me making $25 per puppy sold and I would struggle to get a couple a week. After the owner had me read Tom Hopkins' book I developed great confidence and put his practical techniques to use. The best part is that I never felt like that "used car salesman" I always thought of when I thought of a great salesperson. I never conned anyone out of their money. Mr. Hopkins teaches that everyone who comes in the store has an interest in the product, and that it is your job to guide them as to why they were right in the first place to consider buying it so that they will leave the store with one that day as opposed to down the road in the future. I bought this book when I was still doing accounting and I knew I was starting a sales job in a week. I asked a salesperson what book did he recommend. He said this one. Well a day later a different visiting salesperson came in to the company I was temping for and I asked him the same question! THE SAME ANSWER. So I got it! This book WILL WORK GUARANTEED if you buy it and APPLY IT! As a bonus there is a chapter on life and a chapter on selling to the people that matter most to you!! Your FAMILY!!! I am looking at the prices on Ebay and I am AMAZED how cheap thus book is going for!!! One to 3 dollars!! It is going for 29.95 at Tom Hopkin's website! Now one to three dollars is cheap, don't you agree? SIDEBAR: Let me assume that you have a loved one that is starting out in sales (commissions) and you feel that a steady paycheck is a better idea. HMMM, what do yo do? Well, my free suggestion is to purchase this book, give it to him/her and let them know that this came HIGHLY recommended from sales people. If, they are SERIOUS you will see the results in income and the work put in. If not, then after your gift of support and your words of encouragement you are off the hook with NO FIGHTING! I read this book as a young salesman when it was first published. I am happy to see it is still available. The material reinforced and clarified skills I had learned from other more conventional and older sources. There are no "shortcuts" to success, no "born" salesmen. His methods are not for the lazy. Tom Hopkins, along with other classic authors, completely understands true salesmanship...no b.s., how to practice humility (look up the definition), the importance of listening, asking for the order, when to shut up, and more. He presents practical, straightforward, current advice that works.
Having been in sales for over 30 years and having read dozens of books on selling, this book is the very best source of what selling really is, and how to become a top sales person.
