I very highly recommend this book for anyone interested in learning a new language. The author has done an exemplary job of writing a language learning book. I bought this as a replacement for a lost book. This is very well written, and I've found it to be inspiring as well. Reading this book actually left me with a desire to continue my language studies with a renewed enthusiasm to continue. It even has a few segments which I found to be hilarious. If you're even thinking about learning another language: Please Get A Copy Of This. You Will NOT Regret Doing So.

This is one of the best books I know to help you get started with learning a language on your own. Some elements are sadly dated, as this is a pre-internet publication, but the basic premise of the book is still sound today. Barry Farber takes you step by step in choosing a language to study, assessing your current knowledge of target language vocabulary, and he helps you decide which materials-- books, audio, etc, are right for you. I read this years ago and began my study of Russian, and it really got me fired up and ready to go!

Got up at 2:00 a.m. to watch the PBS program on same. That's what prompted me to buy the book. Either watch the program or buy the book. I'm learning Navajo and the techniques have been a great help!
