Review: Hitchiker’s guide to the galaxy. Funny, Inspiring, Uplifting, Amusing, Interesting. Douglas Addams’ fabulous book makes a great movie. The effects are not up to the standard of Star Wars, but they carry the plot just fine. A touching story with a lot of funny stuff in it. The editor of Analog told me once that he would like to use more science fiction humor, but it is “Devilishly difficult to write.” Indeed it is, and Addams is one of few authors who have managed it. Get yours as soon as you can find one reasonably priced.
The late Douglas Adams used science fiction as a way to tap into the obsequiousness of British manners. He viewed the universe as a shortsighted place not unlike Earth, fueled by petty bureaucracy and childish whims. I've never been much of a fan: reading his novels is akin to being stuck in an elevator with a painfully ironic nerd who can't suppress his pet obsessions. Adams digresses wildly from his tale of a modest British everyman and his wacky intergalactic friends as they seek the answer to "life, the universe and everything." His books were an excuse for him to indulge in absurd knock-knock jokes about semi-mathematical nonsense, or philosophizing about how dolphins and mice have been running the Earth unnoticed since the Dawn of Man. He has an interest in vaudeville gags, winding word-game poems, endless puns, and characters with names like Slartibartfast, Zaphod Beeblebrox, and Questular Rontok. But admittedly, his fans could find a way to tap into his geek pleasure in highfalutin words and lowbrow comedy. It's all fueled by a love of words, words, words.Read full review
Although I already left comments and review of this I will re- comment I had expected something somewhat better according to the reviews and comments, apparently by the author! It was entertaining however it didn't meet my invoked expectations

Love the intellectual humor. I think that it stays very true to the books. Wonderful casting. I'm a fan of science fiction as well as BBC shows, so this was right up my alley. My teens loved it too when we rented it & that is what made me decide to buy it. I think that it is very quirky in a cute way. The way they bring the scenes to life was really great. Nice use of effects to show off the jokes. Can't really described it well enough...so you'll just have to get it and see for yourself. Probably not for family movie night if you have young children. They might be scared by some of the scenes and most of the humor would go over their heads. If you like shows like "Dr Who" then you would most likely enjoy this also. Definitely in my Top 20 Favorites category.
I love this movie for several reasons. It's truly an original with a brillant cast and well executed special effects. Not really a spoof, say, like Galaxyquest (which obviously spoofs Star Trek). (Coincidentally, Alan Rickman also plays a part, though he is- disappointingly-only heard, and not seen- i.e. James Earl Jones/Darth Vader.) The very beginning blew me away because of the dolphins, though one would only comprehend why if you had also read Ah-Mah-Book One of the Heartmind Chronicles. The ancient Egyptian character has a most profound experience with dolphins as did the author, Emily Seate (with one) as did I once as well. I believe there is no coincidence in the significance of the dolphins, though sadly, most would not recognize it unless they experienced something likewise. Aside from the dolphins, basically, this film is for the sci-fi/fantasy fan who's also a bit of a sillyheart (which I most definitely am). Perhaps Star Wars meets Dr. Who, meets Beetlejuice? Just campy, good fun. :)Read full review
