This book fills a niche in the oft neglected early years of Heisey's production. My biggest frustration with the book is that it has about twice as many pages as necessary becasue most of the photos are repeated multiple times. e.g. The #1235 Beaded Panel and Sunburst Punch Bowl is shown on the cover, in Opal and Ivorina Verde on page 41, those two pictures repeated again on page 82, and then again on page 137 along with three other pictures of the set on pages 136-137. Frankly, one picture would have been enought with the caption indicating what other colors were made and using the space for other pieces in the pattern or even a listing of pieces made in the pattern. The highlights for me are the many rare colored and experimnetal items that are pictured. Some factual errors crept in, like "In 1879 the sons of A. H. Heisey purchased the other half of Heisey Glass." (pg 16) This is actually a reference to the George Duncan Sons Glass Company with A.H. Heisey being one of the "sons" by virtue of his marriage to Susan Duncan. If you have the book please note that the captions for the two vases at the top of page 134 are swapped.Read full review
Heisey Glass by S. Dunbar is an outstanding book for the experienced collector/dealer of Heisey Glass. The information on the company and pieces shown in the book are accurate and the pictures are outstanding. Especially the color pictures. Overall, the only lacking part of the book is the fact it deals with only the rarest of Heisey and only touches on what was available to the author of the book. It tends to lead the reader down a fuzzy path of knowledge because much of Heisey Glass is not represented in the book. What is in the book is Excellent in content and presentation but lacks in real depth of the totality of what Heisey Glass produced from 1896 to 1957. It is also a bit vague on the period of years Heisey Glass molds were utilized by other companies and exactly what items were produced and for how long. Overall, this is a good to excellent amplifying volume but one would need other sources as well to be proficient in evaluating/collecting Heisey Glass.Read full review
This book as stated concentrates on the early years with pages on pages of slightly glossy color photos and many unmarked hard to find pieces.
