*No plot spoilers As a huge fan, I had recently re-read books 5 & 6 to get up to speed and in the mood for the Deathly Hallows. In a way, I wish I hadn't re-read them as I felt the writing in this wasn't quite up to previous standards and I even managed to read this thoroughly & cover to cover in about 12 hours. As a previous reviewer said, I spent the first half of the book waiting for it to really get started, for explanations, twists, action. JK Rowling seemed to me, in her writing, a little rushed to get the epic over. Some of the twists that did come where unexpected, others not, but there just weren't enough of them. Some things seemed to be thrown in for convenience without a good explanation. On the whole, I still enjoyed it. My questions were answered, albeit not always to my liking, but then what novel can keep everyone happy? Very sad to see the end of such a great storyline and in spite of my disappointments, if you've read 1-6, you should still read this last one. I'll be re-reading again, more slowly, in the hopes of finding some subtle twists and turns that I might have missed.Read full review

This is the final book in the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling. The Deathly Hallows ties up many of the loose ends in the series, but also offers many possibilities for Ms. Rowling or any author she may allow to use the world she has created. The Epilogue in the Deathly Hollows leaves this door wide open. I have discussed these books with many other parents and I would like to address people's concerns about magic. People talk about magic being "of the devil". First and foremost this is a work of fiction. Children learn to succeed by using their imaginations. Harry Potter starts life at a serious disadvantage as an orphan raised by selfish, fearful, people. Harry remains a kind, compassionate child as his world changes in ways he cannot begin to imagine. He befriends scary beings and people who are vastly different from himself. Throughout the series Harry exhibits the highest standards of nobility and courage. Parents need to recognize the magic as imagination and see that the underlying theme of these books is the struggle between good and evil. Through Harry and his friends good wins and evil is destroyed. The world needs Harry Potter.Read full review
I love the Harry Potter series and re-read it every few years. While I enjoy the films, too, Rowling's original text is so very rich and colorful - she really did create another world with her words! I recently re-discovered the joy of hearing a favorite book read aloud when I started collecting audio books to listen to on my long daily commute. The Harry Potter series can't be beat for this - Jim Dale does an excellent job bringing the characters and their world to life. If you enjoy experiencing a good story more than once, try buying your favorites on audio. They make excellent listening for long drives/commutes. And try it with your kids, too. Hearing the written word read aloud is proven to instill children with a love of reading, so do an audio book instead of the DVD player once in a while!Read full review
I've read 1000s and 1000s of books, all really good works of literature. This is the very best book I've ever read -- ever. The only catch is that you really must have read all of the 6 preceeding books in order to have a full appreciation of what this gifted author has done. Ms. Rowling has written a story, from book 1 to book 7, that is appealing to all ages. The characters, scenes, details -- all are so truly superb. Listening to the book, read by the AWESOME Jim Dale, is sheer luxury. Mr. Dale reads all the Harry Potter audio books, and it's no surprise he's won awards for doing so. Listening is a different skill than reading, and once you've read all these books, to go back and listen to them is a joy. You notice details differently, and the story is swirling in your mind, waiting eagerly for the next rise in the car so we can listen to more. My children and I have actually stayed in the garage listening to a part of the book until we could get to a point where we could bear to stop until next time. I highly recommend this book, as well as the other HP books. This is the ULTIMATE, and it wraps up so many incredible details and storylines -- amazing!Read full review
