John lays out the Truth as it is. Easy believism is dangerous because it leads the sinner to believe that if he accepts a list of facts about Christ that he is saved...the demons believe also so what makes the christian different? MacArthur shows that the new birth in Christ is new life, it means transformation. True saving faith produces a righteous life. If the profession of faith is made with out a new creation resulting from the work of God, then it is profitable for one to question his or her claim of salvation. Repent and believe the gospel is the biblical call. John is clear to point out that repentance is not taught today.. The true picture of conversion is a departure from the bondage to a sin.[ as a natural way of life]
Praise God MacArthur wasn't the author of God's salvation, as his would be a salvation of works completely devoid of the grace and free nature of the gospel as described in the Bible. Rather than accepting the plain meaning of the text, MacArthur has approached the text with the preconceived notion that salvation can't really be as "easy" as he once believed it to be. And as has historically happened throughout time, MacArthur succeeded in making the Bible say what he wants it to say by ignoring proper methods of interpretation.
The "greatest enemy" of the church has always been the superficiality of the "believer". No one has ever done a better job of presenting the Gospel of Christ and the "true nature of saving faith" than John MacArthur has in this book. Our prosperous nation is suffering from the plethra of "easy believism" gospels being presented on most religous TV stations and in many churches today. John MacArthur calls believers to the understanding that true salvation and discipleship are one in the same, and they require a "denial of self", "daily cross-bearing", and "obedience to Christ." Anything less is "dead faith" that does not save.
