The DVD was in the new condition as described. It's been a while since I saw this version, but the DVD played marvelously. It was clean and pristine! The cast was well chosen for the film. Mell Gibson knocked Hamlet out with such fervor. Glenn Close was magnificent as Gertrude. The play has been performed for over 400 years, and there will be many other Hamlets in the future. But this one is dynamite.

I recall enjoying Olivier years ago, and I certainly liked reading the play in college, for all that I had to. And I like Mel as an actor, and Glen. But I watched half of this, went to bed, and have, unusually for me, felt no need to finish it as I'm afraid it put me to sleep. I chose the Mel Gibson Hamlet DVD because I knew my college students would be able to relate to a contemporary star, so that would make Shakespeare's most famous play more accessible. Gibson gives a passionate portrayal of the Prince of Denmark. The scenery, music, and actors all make this play come alive. Since the four-hour play was reduced to two hours, of course, some of the scenes were either deleted or left out, but all in all, this was a great presentation. The DVD itself is good because, as with most DVDs, there are all those great "extras," for example, Gibson himself discussing his role as Hamlet. I highly recommend this DVD to all interested parties. I am thrilled to say that after most of my students actually read Shakespeare's play, they could actively enjoy the Hollywood version. Gibson should have won an Oscar for this one. Anyone who wants to view the most-performed play of all ages should purchase this DVD. Become more cultured!Read full review
Hamlet returns to Denmark when his father, the King, dies. His mother Gertrude has already married Hamlet's uncle Claudius, the new King. They urge Hamlet to marry his beloved Ophelia. But soon the ghost of Hamlet's father appears and tells Hamlet that he was murdered by Claudius and Gertrude. Hamlet must choose between passive acquiescence and the need for a vengeance which might lead to tragedy. Zeferelli is a master filmmaker, and I highly suggest this movie to anyone who has ever marveled at the human spirit portrayed through film, and literature as well.
Great film! It got here just in time for my neice's birthday. Mel Gibson plays a great role, first as his father dies, then his sister commits suicide. The queen (Glenn Close)is very evil and tries to trick Hamlet into sleeping with her. I love midevil type movies. All of the characters in Hamlet were dressed for their roles and they all had mid-England voices yet I could certainly understand everyone. Great movie, a must see!
