Just when I thought I'd never see a really cute movie again, along came the second remake of the 1988 film Hairspray, originally directed by none other than John Waters. You've got to remember the old one to really appreciate this one even though the first one had some really big stars such as Sonny Bono & Deborah Harry as the parents. We have to go back in time to the year 1962 again and pick up where the teenager Tracy Turnblad and her friend Penny Pingleton are watching the Corny Collins show and dreaming of how they could really fit into that scene. Tracy gets a chance to dance on the show and the rest is history. Her dancing skills attract Corny Collins, but also the attention of teenage heart throb, Link Larkin. But not everyone is happy with the decision to have her dance on the show. The shows manager, Velma von Tussle (Michelle Phieffer) will do anything to get Tracy kicked off the show, even if it has to include Tracy's parents of new friends Seaweed and Motormouth Maybelle. Although we faced various racial issues back then, we start to believe that integration may just as well be the way of the future after all if everyone would just all get along together. We also are face with having to realize that all our petty prejudices about looks, race, and body size are really so unimportant and immature that we should have these sorts of feeling towards one another. Thanks John Waters for making the second film possible and flashing us in your cameo as well. I give this a 4/5 because it's fun to watch and very cute. This is one of those rare feel good movies that has you dancing in your seat- i felt so good throughout the entire movie and didnt want it to end. you will be humming the songs the minute the last credit roles on screen. It is rare that people applaud at the end of movies anymore, but audiences did at all three times i saw it in the theatre. Incredible performances from everyone in the cast and directed brilliantly. The broadway musical was amazing, and the nothing can compare to seeing this feel good extravaganza live, for a movie it comes pretty darn close. Your feet will be tapping along to all of the fun music and John Travolta and Nicky ( newcomer) are first rate as well as Michelle Pfeiffer QUEEN LATIFA and James marsden also shine and are perfect in thier roles and hey, ZAC EFRON holds his own as well, i just cant say enough aabout this wonderful movie- it will go down as a classic, and will hold its own along other musical classics about a certain era. this is the 60s at its best and the movie leaves you with a ultra postive feeling that the world CAN be a good place if we all just STOP judging, and accept everyone just for who they are, regardless of skin color, body size, orientation, etc. This is a movie about hope, acceptance and joy, oh did i mention that i LOVED LOVED LOVED this movie? justNtymeRead full review
Fun, fun, fun. Great use of engaging music and dance to support a social justice theme. Every musical tune was awesome!

This is a very good and fun remake. The songs are pitch perfect. Good Morning Baltimore anyone?? I had such a fondness for the original cast though. I have a tough time not trying to think about them. Mink Stole, Ricki Lake, Sunny Bono, and of course DIVINE!! I think this is a fun film. It has been made a little more tame than anything Waters would have ever done, but that's alright. It's solid and good fun, but I still recommend the original!
It's funny but I got this for my girlfriend, we have an extensive collection of Blu-ray. I remember seeing this when it came out and thought man.... this is going to be awful !!!!!! Was wrong, the musical numbers are super, great revised version of Waters classic !!!!! Travolta and Walken are the best !!!! Michelle Pfeiffer still stuning after all these years !!!! A must see for any music lover with an awesome story and message !!!!!
