When working, this unit is great. It does everything, from printing to scanning, to producing photos. It has a much smaller footprint than the newer HP printers that have the same capability which makes it good for home use. But the HP firmware in it that locks it up sometimes when ink cartridges "Expire" and continuing will "Void Warranty", and HP support is lousy. I still haven't got it fully functional.

I've had my HP c5180 since 2006. Aside from one early problem which required an extensive chat with tech support, I've been able to deal even with a sticking paper feed with my reliable nail file and a folded sheet of paper. Since there are no true new models around, you can pretty much ignore HPs fussiness over silghtly outdated ink cartridges but it will require repeated 'okays'. Edit photos well so that you don't have to do to many print runs. I've had some great results. When printing for several large prints, I used to do a quick test run on regular paper so that I could make adjustments before using best quality ink amounts. Since we had to replace my husband's printer, I wanted to upgrade the next printer but we have a problem with the cats prefering to sleep on the printers. This model is perfect for catnaps. So the upgrade has been postponed for reorgaqnization. In the meanwhile, we purchased our 2nd HPC5180 for my husband. I also wanted a printer which used the same ink cartridge. There are several models which do take HP-02 but most aren't as good as the HPC5180. I'm not crazy about the HP scanner program but it works and I often use the scanner capability to scan in those older 35mm prints which I want to organize and file for easy access. I know that it has a tendency to vibrate; sometimes it tells me that a job didn't print when it did, but it keeps running...and doing a darn good job on regular copy as well as photos.Read full review
The C5180 comes from an era when HP Inkjet printers were engineered to a "T", built to withstand the rigors of heavy-duty office work on the mechanical side, with great software to bring it all home. It just brims with elegant design. For example, changing one of the six individual ink cartridges is dirt simple: lift the lid and they're right in front of you., Just pop open the latch on the cartridge, pull it out, pop in a new one, close the latch and lower the lid again and you're done. In and out in less than a minute. And the machine is very quiet when it prints - especially in comparison to contemporary HP plastic monstrosities. Fine print quality, excellent speed, and reasonably easy on ink (the individual color cartridges help a lot). I originally bought mine in the late 1990's for about $1100.00 and used it for nearly 20 years until it broke down a few months ago. I really hated the idea of buying a new one for many reasons, but repair was simply impractical. I struggled without a printer until I just couldn't avoid replacing it. I decided to take a chance on buying another one used, and I'm so glad I did. It's like having a favorite shirt back from the laundry.Read full review

When my original Photosmart C5180 printer spat out an "o" ring after about 17 years I was very upset. As far as the C5180 series is concerned, it was the very best printer money could buy. The print quality was/is exceptional. I hated the thought of replacing it with today's more plastic (replace it sooner) version. What's a person to do??? I bought another one to take it's place, and that wasn't easy to do being the age of the unit. BUT, I did find another printer, same make and model, and I was delighted. This new (old) printer is like an old friend. And why HP decided to replace it I have no idea - - - 8^P There is nothing bad with the unit. I love it. I mean I REALLY love it. I wish HP would make this same series again. It was easy to set up. Quality is excellent. Great cost value.
