The HP 4050 is a SOLID printer. It is not super fast by today's standards, but at 17 ppm it is more than adequate for most everyone. The printers were over engineered to last nearly forever with a duty cycle of over 30,000 pages per month in the time before planned obsolescence in the printing world. There are tons of aftermarket toners available for less than $50 that will print between 10-12,000 monochrome pages.(depending on % coverage on a page.) There are printer drivers available for old operating systems as well as windows 10. It can be set up as a network printer with the optional jet direct card or connected to most PC's with a USB to parallel port cable(or parallel to parallel on older machines. There are very few parts to wear out and a little bit of maintenance recommended about every 200,000 pages so for most home users that means once or twice a lifetime.Read full review

I bought this printer to replace an HP LaserJet 4000 that was killed by lightening. I wanted to be able to use the accessories I had for the 4000. This printer was a refurb and I got it on Ebay for $193 including shipping. A new printer would be $1000 or more. This came with 16MB of memory and I added the 16MB from the old printer. This printer prints faster than the old one and 'awakes' quicker. This kind of deals are great for home use. I used the old printer for over 10 years and printed tens of thousands of letters and such for our fire department's fundraising.
I am the IT Manager for a 12 employee CPA firm. We bought our first HP 4050 10 years ago for $1500. 500,000 pages later, I still have it. I have been buying the HP 4050's on Ebay for over 2 years in the $125 price range. They usually have low page counts (under 50K) and often come with toner. I have 12 of them. They are a workhorse. I usually have them cleaned annually, and put in new rollers (a very low cost item) as they need them. They usually go 200,000 pages before needing a fuser assembly. We print thousands of pages through them. They provide an adequate speed, and a quality product. My laser guy knows I have a fleet of them and stocks most of the parts. It is nice to have only one type of printer cartridge that fits everything. They are a great printer, and I am still buying them as I need them.Read full review
I will only buy hp printers. They're dependable and inexpensive to operate. The 1050 is a workhorse. Not the fastest on the block but drop dead dependable and runs forever. I print mortgage loan documents which number 100-150 pages each, so the large duty cycle is essential. Toner cost is very reasonable. Replacement parts are easy to find. I don't think there is any other printer in its class.
