Schaff's "History of the Christian Church" is considered by Reformed Christians to be the gold standard reference on the topic. It weaves together secular and religious history through the centuries. Note that this 1998 Hendrickson edition contains two volumes written by Phillip Schaff's son David. These are said to be first editions, and cover the period of the middle ages right to the dawning of the German Reformation; this is the period of the Crusades and the endless battles between popes and kings. David's volumes were written early in the 20th century and, as such, are not in the archaic English used by his father. As one with a nearly-forgotten education in European history and literature, I found David's volumes to be as compellingly readable as a good historical novel. Well worth the $200 - $250 asking price.Read full review
