For those of us who think Hamish Macbeth is just fine in written form, in the novels of M.C. Beaton -- firm but caring, lazy but always willing to chase a clue, appealing to women but forever thwarted in his love life -- the Scottish television series is a bit of a disappointment. In his video life, Hamish is short and terrier-like, not tall and loopy. He has a harder crust, though his common decency breaks through from time to time. But then, books usually are better than their movies. I've watched all the Hamish Macbeth shows and will watch them again. The Highlands are wonderful. TV John is a great character, and isn't a character at all in the books. The villagers are a fetching, motley lot. I even like the cattle. The series has been concluded, which is a shame. Three seasons doesn't seem enough. A Highlander at HeartRead full review
This wonderful Scottish Detective show, is set in some of the most scenic places in Scotland, Each show has twists and turn that keep each episode fresh. It is also great that the whole village seems to be drawn into the plot. Love this show. Highly recommend

We really enjoy these characters and the many different plots in a small town in Scotland..

Barely watchable. Lack of subtitling means much of dialog, spoken in a kind of faux Scots idiom, is incomprehensible. I gave up during the second episode.

Discs work perfectly. Love the series with one of my favorite actors.
