This stellar Broadway play from Arthur Laurent, Jule Styne, and Stephen Sondheim ranks as one of the great pieces of American musical theater. The play and the subsequent film feature the enormously popular "Everything Is Coming Up Roses" and also includes "Small World," "All I Need Is the Girl," "You Gotta Have a Gimmick," "Let Me Entertain You," "Broadway, Broadway," and a half dozen others. The story follows the life of Rose Louise Hovick, the infamous queen of burlesque. Mama Rose, played by Rosalind Russell, propelled by the fame she never achieved, is determined to make her two daughters vaudeville stars whether they like it or not. Her bets rest with the older daughter, June, until June strikes off on her own, putting all the pressure on Louise (Natalie Wood), who isn't particularly interested in her mother's aspirations. At the same time, the world of vaudeville is decaying slowly around them, with many of the stages turning to burlesque acts. In a spontaneous move, Louise creates her own strip show onstage, and even though Louise doesn't display any skin, the act catches on fire. Actresses Russell and Wood pull off the difficult dramatic roles, but the real charm of the film rests in the excellent soundtrack.

the vendor needs to use better packing material. it was thin, flimsy and the box got marked. it can't cost that' much more to protect it before putting it in a sleeve. some bubble wrap or even use a paper bag would be better then just a thin sleeve.

    The best thing about this DVD is that it preserves the wonderful "Musical Fable" GYPSY. Although some liberties were taken when the quintessential best musical of all times reached Hollywood, the integrity of the production remains solid. A brilliant score by Jule Styne & Steven Sondheim, along with the perfect book by Arthur Laurents makes GYPSY the "Show of Shows" always and forever. If you missed seeing the original Broadway production starring ETHEL MERMAN (for whom the show was written), or the close-to-the-original 2008 revival starring PATTI LUPONE, this film version will bring you the basic elements of the stage production.     A Truly Great & Timeless Actress

    Natalie Wood has always been a fantastic actress. She showed early on that she had what it takes to be a great actress. Her portrayal of Gypsy Rose Lee is outstanding. This is a story with alot of heart. But the best is the realistic job she does in the lead role. If you have never seen it, maybe it is time you did. The adventure is well worth the cost of admission.

    A Stage Mom wants to make it big-But her children grow up -Now What?

    This is a great movie Starring Rosalind Russell as a stage Mom who uses her daughter to try to make HER dreams to come true! Meanwhile, Mom does not even notice the her "Baby" has grown up, until she leaves to run her own life. Now the only chance Mama has at making it big, is with the Other daughter ( Natalie Wood) she never gave much attention to. Mean while Vaudeville has dwindled to nothing, and the girls end up at a burlesque show theater. Here is where Gypsy is born- a lovely lady in her own right. And here is where they finally make it big.
