I would have rated this DVD higher if not for a couple of things that I'll address now and then tell you why you should still buy it.#1-The DVD I got will only play on 2 of my 4 players(all pretty recent)#2- After each lesson/chapter the disc goes directly back to the menu instead of advancing to the next one.(pretty annoying)#3- It is pretty short but what is on here is XLNT STUFF. Now The Good-- First off If you dont know who Bob is(most of you probably do )He was a player in Muddys band thru out the 70s and early 80s and was one of the few people that Muddy passed down some of his style to. the setting is Bob sitting with a nice 90s TV LP Special and a small great sounding Fender tweed amp, probably a 50s Champ. He plays and sings some good examples of the way Muddy played. Some of it is in the open G tuning and some is in concert E tuning. When Muddy played in other keys he used a capo, but the fingering remains the same. He shows us some turnarounds, basslines, slide licks, chords that Muddy used. By no means comprehensive, but quite enough to get you going. Bob also surprised me with his voice. He gets down really deep and sounds alot like Muddy in a good way, really natural not affected or poser like. He also lightens it up with some pretty funny comments that might go over some peoples heads, but if your here reading this they shouldnt go over yours. As far as the actual lessons, for the most part they are pretty good. Sometimes there is a split screen showing both righthand picking and lefthand fretting clearly, sometimes not. He usually goes thru stuff at speed and then slower, not super slow, but slower. Some of the shots are pulled back so far you can see all of Bob, the floor, the chair, the amp.etc. Some are different angles that give you a good view of the fretboard and some not. If you are familiar with the guitar you should be able to see and figure out whats going on. If you are a beginner keep that remote handy. There is a booklet with Tab and notation of the lessons, it helps out a lot. I have been playing for a while and thought I had alot of this stuff down, but I have learned many things that I was doing was "WRONG"(if you buy the DVD and watch it ,you'll get my little inside joke here.) There is some all too brief footage of Muddy playing the Montreux Festival in 73(I think)with Junior Wells, Pinetop,Buddy Guy,and Bill Wyman from the Stones on bass and a couple guys Bill used on his solo album Monkey Grip(drums and guitar, I forgot their names)Too bad we dont get to see more of this killer show. Sometimes the fretboard could be shown clearer and if Bob had slowed way down this lesson could be better,But I gleaned a whole lot of stuff from this. And where else are you going to get a chance to learn from a cat who played ,toured lived with and was mentored by The great man himself? So buy this and try to find some video with Muddy actually playing and you should be Strollin down Mainstreet even if you Cant be Satisfied coz you cant see the Man play in person!!!!! BUY IT..Read full review
For me this is clearly a scam. Everything makes you think that you are buying a DVD where you are going to see Muddy Water performing his songs, but instead you have to see someone else giving some tips on how the song are played. This is not was I expected tu buy.
If you want to learn to play like Muddy, then learn from someone who actually played with Muddy. Great DVD! Bob Margolin is an excellent instructor!
