I purchased this film to was Elijah Wood in a different kind of role. I expected to be surprised, since he plays such a rough fighter -- however, I felt he pulled it off quite well. His transformation from quiet, shy college kid to the tough street thug fighter he becomes was believable and actually quite convincing. While this is a bloody, violent film (and not for children!), I found it to be believable and got caught up in the action as it progressed. This truly could have happened to a young man visiting England. It was somewhat predicable, once you discover the conflict, and you expect the tragic results, but all in all, it was a very interesting film.
Ok,this is about the ICF (inter city firm) and not the GSE, but that's alright I'm not going to whine about that. It was actually a very good movie, the only thing I didn't like was Elijah Wood. I just didn't find him convincing enough as a West Ham bovver boy from the beginning to the end. They should've got someone else in that role, more like Mark Wahlberg. Other than that I enjoyed it, especially the fella that plays the leader of the Millwall firm-VERY REAL, loved it. Good story, nice violence, good film.
Green Street Hooligans is the first movie to put the violence behind the Football ‘Firms’ in England since its predecessor, “The Firm,” in ’88. The film takes the push-over Matt Buckner, who got kicked out of Harvard for another’s wrong doing, and takes him to his sister’s place in London. Matt’s brother in-law, Pete Dunham, takes him into the underground of European Football and to become apart of Pete’s own firm. As the film progresses Matt learns to stand his ground and “beat twelve shades of shit,” out of rival firms. A watchable film with likeable characters, and the captivating fight scenes, makes it one too see. However, there were several aspects of the film that took it for ‘Excellent’ to ‘Good.’ One being that the whole plot of the movie, while appealing, is questionable to whether or not it’s true. For the skeptic, the only way to find out for sure is to see it, first hand, for yourself. But to agree to disagree, it’s quite the thought if it weren’t true. Another thing was the chain smoking. The film as more shots of folks smoking then it does fight sequences, building itself into a nuisance. And a final thing I found troubling was an ending that failed to deliver, I’ll keep me figurative mouth shut, as not to spoil anything, be ready to be left hanging with nothing to hold as the credits begin to roll. All in all, the flick was pleasing on multiple levels, you’ll laugh, maybe cry, either way, once you get past a couple of things, you’ll probably feel like getting in a fight. I give it a 4 out of 5. -W. Wicheta (Will71662)Read full review
Being a soccer fan, picked up this title. Never expected E Woods (a Hobbit nonetheless) to play a thug. While still not completely plausible, he did a decent job. Story was entertaining. And brought about an awareness of the soccer clubs (extremists) in Europe. They take fandom to a more serious level (a dark and dangerous level). It is not a deep movie, so don't try to analyze it from that perspective. Instead sit back and enjoy the action, without using your brain....lol....it will be worthwhile using this method.
This movie is elijah wood at his best. i don't really like him as a actor but in this movie he shines. the rest of the cast is european guys but they are very good as wel. basically the movie is about the rivalry of soccer gangs or firms as i think they are called in the movie. also it shows how these guys live there mundane lives and how once a game starts they have time to let loose. all leading to fights when you are outnumbered at least 5 to 1 in one part. to see the part when elijah is in his first fight in the movie compared to what he turns into. a total american weenie into a convincing drinking chain smoking fighter. Green Street Hooligans is a must see and a must own
