Thoroughly enjoyed this CD set! It consists of 4 disks containing material from several concerts in 1971. The sound quality is outstanding from recordings this old, and the selection of songs is also excellent. The band members sound young and excited, especially Pigpen. In fact, Pigpen is featured on many, perhaps a third, of the songs in this CD set, so fans of him and the band's early years will really enjoy this collection. Highly recommended, and a bargain for so much great music!

This 4 CD box set from the April 1971 tour from the Filmore East in NYC. Is real Good but, it's not the complete shows from ether of the 5 nights run there. It's kind of like the Best of the 5 night run there or a sample of those shows. If your a fan of the doubble Lp Skull & Roses (or Skull F*#K as Dead Heads call it)you'll love this. Some songs like Berther, Drums, other one from that album were from these shows. Not sure if any of those songs from that album appeared on this 4 cd set. This also features Peg Pen doing some Keyboards/vocals on a number of clasics songs like Alligator, Lovelight, midnight Hour, The Rub, hard to handle, & King Bee & his last healthy tour w/ the band untill his death in '72. I think the dead were so mellow & from this peroid until 1973 are my Favorid shows to listen to. This also only features only 1 drummer Billy Kreutzmann (Mickey heart left the already left the band at this point) It also features the Dead's org Keyboard player Tom Constanten on most of disk 3 Dark Star etc.. that alone to me is worth it & well worth a puck up This is cd shows how the Dead can rock, Jam & be country all on 4 cd's. This is right before Keith & Donna Godchaux came on board so if your a Dead-Head & like Pig Pen This 4 cd box set is for you. I only wish they had put the complete set of shows out on CD that would be nice. I think there is one but from 1973 but I'm not sureRead full review
My favorite era / sound of the Grateful Dead....AKA 1971. The Filmore East Shows of April 1971(Cosmic Week) possess a multitude of Magical musical moments...I was thrilled to see the music remixed digitally & re-issued! P.S. The Lovelight of 4/27/71 is the creative masterpeice of Ron McKernan's (PigPen's) musical career! (In my opinion) the best rendition to be found anywhere (& there are hundreds!) The St. Stephan jam of 4/28/71 remains one of my favorite Grateful Dead shows of all time!....a must to own...possess...and "check in" with from time to time throughout one's life!
simply incredible. i love this disc. Pig is on fire. i was a huge "72 fan but '71 might be better. it's like a greatest hits from that era. not a complete show but culled from five nights. something about the NYC crowd brings out the best in the Dead. best I've heard in a while.

A must have for all fans. An absolute quintessential Good Lovin by Pigpen.Soup to nuts, a time capsule of the historic Fillmore on the east coast. An early and beautiful Birdsong. Jerry's guitar playing is crisp, innovative and represents his versatility and musical prowess. Phi is thunderous at all the right times. Bobby lays it down in his unique style. Its great to go back and listen to the early roots of the best band ever. Truly, there was nothing like a Grateful Dead concert. You won't be dissapointed.
