If you are obese, diabetic, suffering from heart disease, worried about cancer, read this book. It's not a diet book. It is a history book. It tells about populations in the world that were virtually free of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, until they began practicing the diet of the Western European world. Yes, they began eating white sugar and white flour. Shortly thereafter they began suffering from the diseases of civilization. Our bodies are not designed to take in these processed carbohydrates. They overload our systems, and we suffer for it. The United States started going down the wrong path back in the 1960s when a doctor presented his hypothesis that fats in the diet, especially saturated fats, were the cause of coronary heart disease. Sometimes even lies can become accepted as truth. Anyway, there is so much information in this book, it could change your life.Read full review

I have read a LOT of books on nutrition and diet, and I found this book to be one of the most instructive of the lot. It was fairly difficult reading, but the ideas were so soundly written , researched and presented that it was worth the effort. It has made me think about how and what to eat in a totally different way, especially considering that I have issues about cholesterol and have been trying to treat them with natural methods. It certainly is worth consideration by anyone who takes their health seriously, very thought-provoking.
This book brings the complexity of testing, concluding, recommending all things to do with nutrition. Slow going, but it's well documented and very interesting.

i bought this book because nutrition science/information is just something i'm in to and i've read 2 or 3 articles about the book in muscular development and it just seem appropriate to purchase. i like my purchase because it is a good read and seems to be a very true book with some good examples and research done to back the book. the price was right too.
Gary Taubes writes a very comprehensive background of type of diets and the scientific basic to support or refute each type. He traces human genetics and our dietary needs. This book was recommended to me by my exercise coach who is a nurse. If you are interested in nutrition, and an objective approach to dieting, then this is the book for you.
