This book moved me deeply. It is an autobiography written by a man who was born and raised in New York City, but was attracted to country life. He and his wife bought a farm in Vermont and a few goats. They cared for the goats, milked them, and began to make cheese. This book is written in simple, moving language that is so vivid I felt as if I was with the author in the mountain sunshine, sitting on a rock, feeling at peace, and watching goats. Because leading the goats to good places to eat, watching over them, then leading them back home to the barn is the same as being a goat herd, the author shares his thoughts about the thousand year history of humans and herd animals. He finds surprising connections to this past in our modern lives. This was fun sometimes, and moving at others. I am not sure I believe him, though, when he assert that the letter "H" originated as a pictogram for a fence to keep in domesticated animals. (As in "HHHHHHHH".) He says this is a picture of a fence. I loved this book. It made me feel more connected with life, and with the beauty of being alive. I recommend that you read this. I think you will find it enriching and thought provoking.Read full review
