Hate opera? Love opera? It doesn’t matter. First of all the Mikado is in English, so unless English isn’t a language you are comfortable with – you’ll understand it. Second, this is absolute, pure fun. Gilbert and Sullivan, Victorians, knew how to stick it to the establishment while making the objects of their satire laugh their heads off. You may find yourself singing parts of the songs in the shower. The Canadians have staged this presentation in a manner that both appeals to modern audiences and applies to modern society. There are a few songs, sung beautifully in high registers, whose words you may want to read as the music has a tendency to mask the language. However, you can easily find the lyrics for the entire opera freely available online. All in all, plunking this into your DVD player will give a thoroughly enjoyable evening’s entertainment. And by the way, we’ve all got a little list of people who never will be missed.Read full review
