Harold Jacobs' Geometry - Seeing, Doing, Understanding, (3rd edition) truly is the gold standard for High School level geometry. Not content to simply spew out proof after proof and then require them to be spewed back, this text covers the hows and whys, and to the delight of the reader, does so in a highly articulate, mature and often witty manner. Jacobs does not talk down to the student and the standard for mastery is high. The teacher's book is equally articulate, assuming a fairly high level of comprehension, but provides a generous amount of information in the process. The test bank is clear, concise and easy to use. My only caveat is not a negative, simply a warning- this is not a book you can simply drop in front of your student and expect them to master alone- this course requires the interaction of a teacher. If you find yourself in a place in which you know you won't be able to devote 1-3 hours a week to teaching then this course could prove frustrating to you. I used the earlier edition with my oldest child when she was in 8th grade and at that point I was really relearning it myself. Going through it again with this new edition, I find it a bit easier ( owing in part to the improved teacher's edition), but in both circumstances, the key to success is simply sticking with it. (I bought a second used copy of the text book, so that when we need to talk through a lesson, we can do so without breathing down each other's necks; this is a big help and well worth the extra money spent.) The marvelous plus with this course is that when you complete it you will have a thorough understanding of the concepts and workings of geometry on more than just the "proof" level. If you have a student who leans towards the humanities, or one who simply likes to have things explained in several different ways, they will enjoy this course.Read full review
I'm a homeschool mom, and I own a book shop. When it came time for my son to take high school geometry, I was so thrilled to have another homeschool mom, who is an excellent math teacher, volunteer to teach a group of students at my shop. She chose GEOMETRY, Seeing, Doing & Understanding by Harold Jacobs. (ISBN 0716743612 ). I was a little stressed over the price, but she said it was the BEST she'd seen and she insisted on it. My son LOVED the book. He said it made everything so clear to him and was interesting and fun. He actually enjoyed reading it and doing him geometry assignments. One thing the teacher said is that Jacob's is strong on proofs, and that those are very necessary to teach logical thinking. My son said, "Mom, in my opinion, if you take Geometry and don't learn proofs, you haven't really learned Geometry." He looked at other geometry books and felt they contained about 1/2 the important skills and information of Jacobs. Also, the information is presented in a different order than many books, with proofs integrated in all the lessons instead of being tacked on at the end. My son, the teacher, and another good math teacher I know all agreed that neglecting proofs is a short cut that misses the point of geometry entirely. I've had people I respect express an different opinion about the necessity of proofs. Perhaps it depends on if you are just trying to get a credit or nourish a true mathmatician. But according to my "experts", for any child who is going to need a good math foundation for future endeavors, or who wants to develop logical thinking skills, proofs are the way to go. This book caught my eye while searching for geometry books. After reading numerous reviews from several sites, I knew I had to have this book! As a homeschool family it has been our mission to locate & use the best curriculum. This is one of them. Concepts are simply introduced, lessons contain good ol' fashion exercises to reinforce concepts, yet challenging problem solving situations are available as well. Real-world applications are included, and there are just enough cartoons and graphics throughout the chapter to keep the student interested. There is no "fluff" in this book; by the time a student completes this book, he should have a confident, solid grasp of geometry! It is important to note that the book touts itself as restoring proofs "to its rightful place in geometry" after its decreasing use in American textbooks over the past 100 years. This book is so impressive that I will be purchasing Jacob's Elementary Algebra to use as a reference, for summer practice problems, and to ensure that there is nothing we "missed" from our former algebra curriculum! Enjoy!Read full review
Has Algebra review lessons to keep up what has already been learned. Will learn and use deductive reasoning. Interesting intro's to sections with cartoons and pictures to help get and keep attention. Answers to selected exercises in back.
Very happy with the book.
