Another book in Terry Brooks' new series. A good read, especially if you're a fan. He has combined his Shannara series with his Word and the Void series here. I really wish he hadn't. Being a fan of pure Fantasy, I was disappointed and left wanting more Fantasy and less earth-mother type religious ideas and real world settings. Too much is left unexplained and background details are often sketchy. Terry Brooks is my favorite author. I will be reading his stuff forever. I really hope the Shannara stuff goes back to its Fantasy roots and the Word and the Void stuff and modern day settings are left completely out of the next series.
The only reason i did not rate this book as excelent is that Mr.Brooks has gotten out of hand with his making a great story into a trilogy in order to bilk his fans out of more money. The Elves of Cintra is a great continuation of the Word & Void trilogy and as part 2 of Armageddons Children (like stated above, too many trilogies!). This latest over-trilogy is starting to evidence connections to the Voyage of Jerle Shannara and the entire Shannara series to make a complete saga spanning millenia. I do think that Mr. Brooks needs to quitt trying to extract more money than his stories deserve with these un-ended books trying to pose as trilogies when all three make one great book... But in this book it is intersting to see the ghosts leave the semi-comfort of their known world and evolve into unwilling participents of the savagry decimating a future earth and North-West America. The words of Allanon in the original Sword of Shannara to Shea and Flick take much deeper hold while seeing critical parts of the colapse of human culture durring the Great War that is the Elves of Cintra. This is a required reading to any and all Shannara fans. And it should be noted that the depths of character Mr.Brooks builds into many subjects in his books (people, places & things) is definately showing beautifuly in this work and is a continued building of all the Shannara series with the gradual evolution of Knights of the Word into the Druid leaders of post armageddon earth, and the emergance of the Ohmsford liniage and their never ending tie to the King of the Silver River. There are some hard felt losses in this book that show to the real human experience in hard times as well. This might lend to caution against very young readers. But Mr.Brooks never resorts to vulgarity or explicit graphics as lesser sci-fi writers do to fill in their short comings in true depth of story telling. I think this is a great story for any reasonable minded age group. Lets hurry up and get to the finnish.Read full review
I was initially seeking a copy of this book after reading its prequel and most of Terry Brooks's other fantasy fiction. I had been outbid on several copies before I was finally able to obtain this one. Readers familiar with Terry Brooks's fiction will know that he usually covers a particular story arc in a trilogy of books. The same is true for The Elves of Cintra. It's prequel Armageddon's Children, it, and the next book in the trilogy Dark Wraith of Shanara ( not yet published) serve as a bridge between Brooks's Knight of the Word trilogy and the numerous books in his Shanara series. While explaining how todays' world, the world of John Ross, Knight of the Word, is altered to become the world of the Four Lands in the Shanara books, this trilogy also serves as a warning to humanity. The pollution of our world and irresponsible use of nuclear power could lead to the obliteration of the world as we know it. For many years, I have been an enthusiastic reader of Brooks's fiction and The Elves of Cintra has proven to be another excellent work by this visionary author. The Elves of Cintra is definately a book that is necessary to read as it starts to bring his word and void books into the world of Shannara. Not yet though... we have to continue reading as The Elves of Cintra have brought both worlds into the same time frame but they have not met each other quite yet. keep reading folks...... Actually I am more excited about Terry selling the movie rights to the Word and Void/Shannara AND his Magic Kingdom Trilogy too. With the computer world it will be a big help in bringing his writings to life. I can't possibly imagine only one movie out of all of this- so, perhaps, these "movies" will keep people in suspense just as his books have. Living in the same town as Terry Brooks I know the author as a young attorney. Book after book he astounds me with his vivid imagination and descriptive powers. From his first book to this last one, I, as part of his reading audience can't wait until the next book comes into print....... The writings of Terry Brooks are about good facing evil (word and void). You can read between the lines and see politics and the real world coming thru in his pages also....... Terry Brooks is just good reading. If a person starts in the middle they will surely go back to the beginning of it all..... TERRY BROOKS is a legend in his own time..... Marsha Mae ARead full review
Terry Brooks doesn't disappoint in this 2nd of the Genesis of Shannara Trilogy. Fast paced with characters I came to love!
