I've always had an interest in Eastern culture. I watched "Memoirs of a Geisha" and really enjoyed it, but I know it was fiction. This story is a true one written by a lady that lived that life. It was easy to read, one of those "can't but it down until you are done" kind of books! It was informative and gave one a bird's eye view of how life was for her. The only improvement I could see that could of been added for the reader's benefit would be pronouciations of the Japanese words used. I knew some of them from watching the earlier mentioned movie, but had to guess at the rest. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in Eastern culture and for those that like to read in order to "travel abroad" in books.
Such a compelling story! The movie, though enthralling, and entertaining, left out so much or added untrue scenes. Aside from that Mineko Iwasaki lays it all out with her book. Excellent!!! ❤️

This is the real deal! If you want to read a true story, but never ever dull, about the life of a real (although now retired) Geisha, read this book now! You won't be dissapointed. Mineko-san draws you in with exquisite details about her training, the difficulties of her life and the drama. This book is a great way to learn about Geisha. It is a valuable source of information, fact and not fiction. And like I said, never dull, never boring.

Great book. I'm enjoying reading it. It is so interesting to go back in time and read about someone's life that is so very different than my own.
