First off: if you hafta have traffic info, this isn't your machine. It has traffic update info, but it's useless. But... I don't care about traffic reports. I need voice command that works, and voice command on this machine works as well or better than anything else I've tried. And very important—This GPS machine has the Mute Button and the Route Kill Button on the main navigation screen, where it should be. For me, to have to dig thru layers to silence the machine is a deal breaker, which is why I buy used Nuvi 3490s instead of new Garmin GPS machines. Touch screen buttons aren't the easiest thing to use while trying to drive, so having to press 3 is unacceptable when there's a machine that allows the user to only press 1 to mute or unmute the machine.

This is a GREAt product in comparison to what's out there on the market from competitors, BUT... there is plenty room for improvements. I owned the previuos version of this Garmin Nuvi, the 3790LMT, and I don't see any reason for getting this new version over the old one, in fact so much so I returned this one I bought on eBay and went back to my 3790 LMT. It was like going back to an old girlfriend with renewed appreciation after dating and seeing all the losers out there. I love the customizable Voice Command that makes the Nuvi 3490LMT (and 3790LMT) totally hands free. 3-d Mode and Lane Assist is a big help, especially in crowded, fast-moving highway traffic so you don't miss a turn or exit. Accessing Points Of Interest are not easy or logical or very useful. NONE of the Nuvi line uses the best or most direct route all the time and a human planning the route, especially with any knowledge of the area, can map a route WAY better, but when you don't know the neighborhood or don't want to map a route yourself it sure beats getting lost because the Nuvi WILL get you there... GUARANTEED. I wish someone would let you drag the route path line graphically like you can on the Google Maps website so you can re-route your trip over a preferred bridge or road or path without having to force the GPS to re-route by disregarding it's directions while on the road. So, nothing new in this version over the previous 3790LMT (so get the older model at a bargain price while others are trading up to this newer version).Read full review
EXCELLENT is my overall opinion of the 3490LMT. I upgraded from a Garmin 1490T because I wanted the voice activation feature of the 3490LMT. The Voice Activation feature is very good; but not perfect. Typically, I have to speak the address three or four times. But, it will usually understand it then, even if, ultimately the address is not found. The screen on the 3490LMT is slightly smaller than my 1490T; but I don't think I can tell the difference. The map and map names are very sharp. I have had one problem in Bluetooth pairing with my smartphone (Samsung Galaxy II SGH-1777). Initially, it would not pickup the Phone Book as the 1490T did. I reloaded the S/W, even though the system said it was current - and then, it worked fine. Other than that, I have only had a few instances of erratic behavior such as hanging and not recognizing the initial Voice Command to open the voice menu. I generally just turn it off and back on and that cures it. Garmin only recommends that I reload the S/W. So far, I've had to do that only once in the two months I had it. Its a good buy for the price (but checkout eBay for deals) - Garmin is pretty reliable and their customer support is knowledgeable.Read full review
Bought this item for its features. The voice command is so great that I can ask directions while driving.......safety first. The 3D graphics is so clear and vivid. The thin design makes it easy to carry around. Overall value, well a bit expensive compared to the other garmin products. One thing more, the battery does not last that long compared to my old garmin. It gets hot when charging. Used this for a week now and im very satisfied with this product.
As the top of the line automotive device from Garmin, it's just what you'd expect from this excellent company. Actually, two days after buying this is was the second from the top...the 5" version was released before this one arrived, but that's the trend with modern electronics. This unit is amazingly feature filled. Just like my other Garmin's, you've got to play with it and push everything that might be a button to see if it is and what it does. It has features that I've never seen listed for this or any GPS, too many to list. The complete handsfree integration with my android phone over bluetooth is one. I'm told that people can hear me better handsfree than with the 4G phone itself. One of the little things I found the other day was it let me quickly and easily enter the speed limit for a road I was on that it didn't know. Then your speed indication turns red if over that speed, as it does normally. I don't have the time to continue, but the 3490LMT is great beyond my expectations.Read full review
